My 2000 contour, with 88,000 mi, which was recently hit in the right door and fender. has a crank sensor (top right center of engine) code left in it. The mechanic replaced it and it still has the same code. Also the car kills when comming to a stop, but will idle fine in nuetral. In further checking by mechanic all voltage, connections, and wiring?? is proper, except for signal out of cpu to the cam sensor. his scanner stated to reflash the cpu. Since the car was hit in that area, he suggested that I reflash a used cpu at a ford dealer. Ford dealer says that a used computer cannot be reprogramed into another car.
Is this true???
and that there were no new updates for original computer. Im not sure if the accident had anything to do with the problem, or if the wiring recall Ive heard about could be a problem. this car was purchaced wrecked and its been over a month since I took it in for this code problem. any help??
can a used cpu be reprogramed for another car??
what year did ford start with a non interchangable computer??
could this wiring recall cause any of my problems??
PS the car is for sale

Only way a computer is reprogramable is if its the same code. There were many for every year. Only 2000 SVT's had the same code (i.e. XGT1). Heres just a quick compilation i did, just from searching www.contour.org. Theres plenty that are missing, but this just shows how many there are.
