When I scan the engine, I get codes for both VSS1 and VSS2. It has been this way for awhile, and just recently my speedometer died and took the cruise control with it. Does this mean one of them is finally dead (probably vss2)? Do I have to replace both of them?

Hello,
Sorry I dont have a reply, especially after a few years, but I will add that I have the same exact problem. For some weird reason I replaced my battery and after this I drove My Subaru Legacy 95 and my Odometer stopped working. I have been looking every where to try to find out which of the sensors VSS 1 or VSS 2. I did remove my odometer to see if it had any rust or corroshion on the contact (none). I also tried the ground the odometer somtimes mentioned in the web but that did not work...:banghead: nothing seems to be working for me. I have scanned the code and it says spped sensor, the check engine light is on and the cruise control stopped working. It has been hard not to speed when the cops are all over the place, and I of course with no speed indicator......:uhoh:
Help Anyone...please..
Thanks

Hey Man,
Just thought ide give an update, my speedometer is working again. It was the VSS1 speed sensor. Replaced it and all was back to normal (got it on Ebay for $45 used). I had a co worker disconnect his VSS1 the on under the hood not the one under the car. His odometer stopped woking instantly, so I went and changed mine (thanks God). The bad news is my ABS is now leaking brake fluid (thats $200 deal). Well I have decided to name my car like Obama did not "The Beast", but rather
"The Plague", as soon as I fix one thing on this car (Subaru Legacy 95) another thing breaksd on it (what can you do the economy is bad).
