Gutting rear pre-cat

I just got a new downpipe (eliminates front pre cat) and having the old one off made me want to start gutting the rear precat. Problem is its turned out to be a real pain in the ass. I tried using a bit mde for wood because it is nice and wide but it isnt long enough. Anyone have any tips as to how I could make the process easier on myself? I have used a hat, swiming gogles, and a resparitor to keep from getting hurt by the junk coming out.

i would go out and buy a long drill bit, and just drill several holes in the material and loosen all that crap up, then get a flat head screw driver up in there and start knocking the rest of it out. As far as i know if, it doesn't have to be a special kind of drill bit.

I actually used a awl that the handle broke off of. I put it in the drill and went to town. I drilled a few holes then started "sawing" back and forth. I took a large flat blade screw driver and started breaking the chunks up then cleaned the walls. Dont forget about the "gaskets" inside the precat. They can be easily removed with a screwdriver though.

get one of those torch they sell at autoparts stores and heat the honey combs until red hot, then spray a good amnt. of water and you see it brake off....
wont that produce kinda unnecessary turbulance on the exhaust system???

extra flow achieved will outweigh the turbulence created.

yeah the bad thing about the 3000gt is the pre-cats is that honey comb made of metal. a drill bit wont work, the only thing i found successfull was a torch and only a torch and nothing else... and for me i gutted mine when i overhauled my engine.

The honeycombs arent metal. The section on either end is metal to keep everything inside if the honey comb should come apart. Once you get that screen out of the way, the rest of the stuff is something like dry mud and is easily drilled thru.

i used an air chisel to gut my cats and it was still really difficult. that material in the pre cats is quite hard to remove. if anyone else has access to an air chisel i would reccomend using it, but be careful not to drill through the pipe itself.

Yea it seems to be metal covered in the dusty stuff. I dont want to heat it because I kinda have to sit underneath it (drilling the metal junk makes it hot enough to sting when it comes out). I think I'll just use a nice long regular drill but and weaken the fuck out of it and get it with the screw driver.
