My 1997 camero is overheating and the oil temp gauge is higher than normal. The heater has stopped working. My boyfriend thinks the radiatior needs to be flushed..any other suggestions?

Check the area between the radiator and A/C condensor. That place likes to pick up and hold trash in it.

Well, first of all the gage is for pressure not temperature.
Second, stop calling it "Camero" (CAMARO)
Third. Whats the max temp it reaches?
1 Blown head gasket (water in coolant + outside)
2 Plugged system by some crapy "stop leak shit"
3 Low level of coolant or improper percentage of antifreeze (You can go as low as %75 water
4 Bad bearing in the pump (noisy usually)
5 Air in the system
6 Fans dont kick in (many causes) (very likely)
7Thermostat is stuck (very likely-replace with a lower one such as 160 degree.)
So many things can go wrong. Give more info.

Can you have a blown head gasket and the car still run?

you bet.
Dont bet on it to last long though, and after it doesnt want to work, you'll be in the work to look at a new engine.

how long would a car run on a blown gasket????

Well, let me tell you from experience (My 1992 has a blown headgasket). Every once in a while, I start her up, and move her back and forth, just so the brakes dont freeze on me. The car will last as long as you want it to last, but the temp will climb faster then the RPMS, so thats all on you.

It depends.
Your oil may look a bit whitish (often will with a blown head gasket as the coolant seeps into the oil), if you change the oil all the time(as it gets contaminated), and add coolant, it could last quite a while, but changing your oil every couple days isn't cheap.

I don't know. You would probably only notice it if you had an oil leak, poor compression, or checked your oil (and noted contaminants). You may also have excessively high oil pressure due to the coolant.

That is unless you do it yourself.. which in total takes 20 minutes and costs $5 or whatever kind of oil you get.

I don't know about you Rally, but changing my oil once a week or more would really start to piss me off, besides, any decent oil is almost $2 a quart, and I'd much rather keep that to fill my tank.

Thats why you change your oil every 3 thousand miles :loser:
That or if you get that expensive stuff that goes up to 30K miles.

Have you read the entire thread? You're missing the point my friend. If you have coolant in your oil, and you want your engine to last, you need to change the oil.

Pre-tell, what oil is supposed to last 30,000?

Oh I didnt think you guys were talking about changing your oil with coolant in it, thats just throwing away money dude..
About the oil that needs to be changed every 30K.. I forgot what brand it was but there is one out there.

Did you mean "Pray tell"?
Mobile 1 extended performance is suppposed to be good to 15k, possibly longer depending on some variables.
And Amsoil makes one that they say is good to 25k....

I haven't come across anything like it, and there's another problem with that type of oil besides the price. Even if it withstands break-down for a long time, contaminants still build up. (i.e. it gets dirty) :grinyes:

I change oil when it gets dirty (around 3000 miles) or less if the car sits a lot and I drive short distances.
You guys forget that oil might last up to 15k, but your filter needs to be changed as well. So if you dont want to end up with bad bearings and crap in the engine change both when you notice that oil is dirtier than it should be.
Also driving with bad head gaskets is practiacaly impossible because you will overheat extremely and damage everything in the engine. even a hair thin crack can cause overheating.
Besides if you run your engine on syntetic oil all its life
and chage it regulary the engine can last 300000 miles easily. (big engines such as v8, diesel 1000000)

My 5 liter cutlass started smocking at 250000 miles (1983) By the sludge build up in it I could tell that noone
ever used syntetic oils or changed oil regularly.

hey, I have seen some strange people not changing oil for 50000 miles! Also my friend had a Ford tempo that was previously had been owned by a woman and the main bearing on it failed at 60000 miles resulting in
a really loud knock. (WTF?) The engine was mint inside.
And I am not picking on ladies here. (things like that do happen...)
All you guys say is true, but common sense shall be the issue here.
