I have a 95 civic ex that runs great when cold but once it heats up it is awful. When you start out from a stop it barely wants to move but once it gets going and it has more gas if runs fine. After 10 or 20 miles though engine light comes on and does weird stuff. Mechanic is not sure what it is. Says it may be brain. Please help.
Thanks

Do this... Pull your Diagnostics port out, and put a Paper Clip into the ports. This will put the ECU into Diagnostic mode (I got used to using this when I had my ITB's, haha).
I just took some pictures... Here's where it's at:

See where it's connected?

See the two ports on each side? To 'complete' the circuit, just put a Paper Clip, or a piece of wire into the Port.

Put the Paper Clip/or Wire in the Port. Drive around until the Check Engine Light comes on, have pen and paper ready. Pull over somewhere safe, cut off the Engine. And just turn it to Power (so you can hear the Fuel Pump Priming), the Check Engine Light will start it's Light Show.
-One LONG Flash = 10
-One QUICK Flash = 1
So 1 Long Flash, and 4 Quick Flashes... 14, IACV. One Long Flash... 10, IAT. 7 Quick Flashes... 7, TPS.
See?
So just get what numbers they are (do it a few times to be sure) and report back. We'll be able to tell you what it is.

u can just stick it in and start the engine up and it ill come up right away no need to drive around. theyll be a long pause b/e codes so make sure to check for that incase u have more than one code

That's what I would do... Aside from he said it only happens AFTER he's driven around for a bit.

Allow me to make a suggestion......Check the codes as the other 2 have said. Write them down........Clear the codes and drive around until the light comes back on. Check the codes again.
This will make sure there are no old codes stored in the ecu.
Just my :2cents:

It is with a mechanic friend right now. He said the code for O2 sensor came up but he did not think it was that. Because of how stange it act. He was leaning toward the brain but was going to play around some more with it first.

sounds like your "mechanic friend" hasnt worked on many Hondas, or he would be able to tell you what the CEL was for...i would clear the stored codes (disconnect the battery for 10 mins) then drive around until it happens again. check the code and post here and tell us.

Hey sorry i didnt want to post a whole new thread since it is related. I did the diagnosis thins by connecting the terminals and watching the check engine light flash. The resulst i got were as follows:
---One long flash, and 7 quick flashes
---Two long flashes
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what these codes mean. Thank you very much. AND also a little backround information, I have a 95 civic EX and i just recently replaced the d16z6 with the d15b vtec.

ok thanks, my tach also jumps all over the place every once in a while ever since i did thwe swap, it also will start to run funny on and off, as well as i little hard to start, could this be a result of anything related to a sensor or is it something else???( The engine ran perfect for the first hundred miles or so, it has about 50K on it)
