Warning: Remote Starters

I don't know if this is has ever been posted before so I'll take a shot. I was changing my belt yesterday and had my hands wrapped around the fan to reach the bottom pulley when... Do you know when I'm going with this? ...I heard the telltale beeping that signals the remote starter has been activated. You never saw a person jump out of an engine bay so quick!!! What happened? I had the keys and the remote in my pocket and while leaning over the truck I hit the button. Now I'm not really stupid and I do has a little comon sense - I normally set my keys and wedding ring on my workbench before I do any work - well this time I didn't. I thought I'd pass my experence on. After it happened I had a good laugh about it but it really scared the poop out of me at the time!!!

Who installed the remote starter ? I have installed 12 + units mostly Design-Tech and some factory Ford units. All came with a pin switch that mounts under the hood, hood open, switch made, remote starter will not activate. Even to get the units programmed you must open the hood and cycle the switch the first time to verify its there. There are ways to get around it, but why its a simple extra safety device. There is also a big Yellow sticker that goes under the hood warning the car has remote start, I always put them on the fan shroud and they are hard to miss. Also anytime my vehicles go anywhere for service/maintance the remote key fob never goes with them. I would investigate getting the hood deactivation switch!!!

If you don't want to get the deactivation switch, then next time just unhook the battery before you do anything.

Ok - Please realize that I do know about the starter and was in a rush to get something done so it slipped my mind. I've had 3 starter installed from 2 diff shops over the years(including Crimestopper and Viper) and noone put in the hood switch. I really don't care though - it comes in rather hand when I want to start the truck w/o going back to the pass compartment. I'm simply posting this to make sure others think about it before they stick thier hands in the engine bay.

Thank Dino! I love it!!

No - this is why every shop manual says to remove the negative battery terminal before *ANY* engine servicing proceedure. :D Glad you made it out okay man. Nothing worse than loosing an online buddy to an accident doing what we all seem to love working on around here!

There wasn't a pin to prevent the engine from starting with the hood open??? who was the manufacturer of this unsafe system?

the shop installed this? Oh, man, you should cut yourself up, and then sue the shop for not installing the hood pin safety switch. I installed remote start in a 95 jimmy, when I went to the hood pin safety switch, I closed the hood the 1st time ,and the fucker broke. Must have gotten bent or something and snapped, so I just didnt put it in, however I do plan on getting a replacement.

I don't worry about it too much. I've had starters for the last 8 years or so. Just an oops. One I don't plan on doing again. Besides, I like not having to put the key in the ignition to start things up - especially with greased up hands. I just find the one little clean spot on a finger or maybe use my nose and hit the button.

yes, I love my remote start. It was a good buy, one that I will be happy with for a long time. One thing I do wish though, is that Mine was a 2 way, so I could see that the car started on the keypad. Mine goes 1200 feet, and sometimes leaves you wondering, "Did it start or not?" o well.

One of the stupidest comments I have ever heard. Wake up will ya, you credibility is draining with every word you speak condoning this action and worse yet, the fact you are now defending it.

The hood switch is there for a reason and you can see now why.

Little high on your pedestal aren't ya? Stay out of my personal choices.

LAughing about a stupid and dangerous practise like this and telling people what you benefit from it is a sign of someone lacking a little maturity.

Maybe you should start a thread about how you got under your truck without jack stands and wheel stops and say how you almost killed yourself that way.

This thread is idiotic and serves no purpose other than making you out to be a fool.

I am doing you a favor by closing this thread, all you are doing is making yourself to look like an idiot.

Thread's closed and for god's sake, smarten up.
