Taurus rumor

I have heard from a couple people that once many of the older Taurus's get over 100,000 miles they start having problems can anyone verify this or is this a stupid rumor. I hope since my 1992 Taurus is now just over 100,000 miles.

I don't know what the "typical" life of a Taurus is but I can tell you about our experience. We had an 87, 2.5 liter, 4 cyl GL that we drove for 187,000 miles. It was running well when it was totaled as a result of being rear ended. We had a couple of minor problems along the way and also had just replaced the transmission which we didn't think was to bad for that many miles. Our 3 boys learned to drive in that car so it wasn't treated with kid gloves.

I currently drive a 95 SE with a 3 liter V6 engine. We bought it used in Aug of 2000 with almost 80,000 miles on it and it has now has 182,000 miles. Except for routine maintenance items, I have had only a heater hose, water pump, and radiotor fail. I have been extreamly happy with the car. It has developed a "miss", which is why I am on the site, but I expect that that will be minor.

The way a car is driven and maintained can have a large effect on the life of a car. Maybe the Taurus' that are falling apart at 100,000 miles wern't properly maintained.

My 99 Taurus has about 163000 on it, and it has been an excellent car. Any car that starts to get a lot of miles is going to have some problems, but compared to the first car I had, the Taurus has had nothing major. I've had to a few problems but nothing major. A lot of it depends on how well it has been taken care of.

I bought my Taurus GL Wagon 93 with a 3.0L V6 with 147.000 miles on it and the previous owner sold it for a really cheap price, because he thought that the problems it has were too much. But as I saw that it were just minor ones, that I could fix myself, I immediately accepted the deal. With things like a 90 cents carburetor cleaner and a screwdriver I fixed things that the repair shop wanted up to 300 Dollars for...now it runs great and I take good care of it. I don't have any trouble with the engine or transmission. I read in another forum that the 3.8L engine makes more trouble, though. Anyway, I do believe that any car is as good as the owners maintenance, being regular oil change with good quality oil the most important single thing.

My 93' 3.8L blew a tranny @ 202,000, was purchased with 145,000. Not sure if tranny was previously replaced, but the head gasket was. Sold the car for $60.

My neighbor's 92' has 145,000, a ton of rust and is on it's 3rd tranny. He bought it for about $400. Has been doing ok, but he never takes it past 50mph.

We also know another person with a 94', has about 130,000 and the transmission is beginning to klunk like mine did before it finally went. No one could explain the klunk to me, it was as if someone just slammed on the brakes going about 45mph, then it started doing it at about 30mph after about 4-5 months. (I learned to drive it so it wouldn't klunk) At that point, I realized that it wouldn't be a good idea to put any money into the car, as I've heard that rumor as well. No sense in replacing something you're going to be replacing in another 6 months.

We also have a friend that has a 96, only issues with the front suspension. I'm thinking it's a GL model, it's really not too bad of a car though. She paid wwaayy too much for it though. I am thinking my other neighbor has a 95, but I am not sure of the year. I don't think he's had too many issues either, I don't know him that well though, I just know he's had that car for a long time.

That's just what I've seen.
