01 1.8Lturbo, O2 sensor code

The kid at Autozone told me my Emisions workshop was due to a bad O2 sensor. Should I just replace it? The car has 110 thousand on it, I think I did the O2 sensor at 80k. Are there any other failures I should test first?

there are 2 o2 sensors on your car. front and rear cat o2 sensor.

Should the code diferentiate them, the kid at autozone wasn't very helpful. I asked him if it showed any detail and his response was "it says O2 sensor" I might need a dealer to check it out for detail I guess.
Ya know what the difference between a used car sales man and an Autozone clerk is?

the code will say either bank 1 sensor 1 (front o2 sensor)
or bank 1 sensor 2 (rear o2 sensor)
or bank 1 sensor 2 (rear o2 sensor)

I got back to autozone for rereading of the codes and came up with p0171 and p0382, 382 is a knock sensor which could just be caused by the other code.
p0171 is the oxygen sensor in bank 1 detecting a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust).
I found some general info on OBD-codes.com, I posted it below. Any comments from you guys, our forum experts, would be welcomed

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
1. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters (K&N, etc.) can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled
2. There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
Possible solutions include:
* In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
* Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
* Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

P0171 doesn't refer to a specific O2 sensor, front or rear, just that bank 1 (the only bank on a 4 cylinder) is too lean. A P0130's series code would refer to a specific sensor. So yes, it could be a number of causes, including the MAF. Also check for vacuum leaks, problems with the secondary air injection system & possible fuel injector trouble. MAF is dedinitely the more common.

Pulled the MAF out and soaked it in Carb cleaner, It looked quite dirty, thought I had it. I degreased and hosed out all tghe air boxes, washed the screen just before the air filter and replaced the air filter.
I was really expecting to sovle this with what I did.
No luck though. I've already replaced the vaccum lines. I did a quick check of the plumbing for air leaks down stream of the MAF sensor. I might have to run it into the dealer to check out the sensors, I'll give it another look. The car is pinging (I assume) caused by the fault. Can I cause perminante damage with the pinging?

The only safe way to clean a MAF is with at least 90% rubbing alcohol, if you used anything else I suggest you replace it. The only way to pin it down closer is to have a scanner to look what the fuel trim values are. The pinging is from the lean condition & isn't good for the engine.
