This scared the hell out of me last nite, and it did it again today. I was driving, kinda fast, nothing too bad though. The lane I was in was ending, so I jumped on the gas and flew around the guy in the lane that wasn't ending. As I flew by, close to the curb, I heard a LOUD POP from the passengerside rear. I thought I cut a tire. I pull over and look at the tires... nothing. Everything was fine. No holes, no nails or nothing. Drove fine the rest of the nite.
Today I was driving home and I was going fast around a bus. I think I hit a little hole or dip, and I hear that same LOUD POP... exactly the same sound, same place. I have no idea what this can be. The tires are fine. I don't know what it is. I don't want to take it in to the shop. I dont have money right now. Thanks

It's not backfire. Too loud for it, and only from the passenger side. Wrong side for exhaust. Its LOUD. Somethings wrong. Shocks? How do I test?

with the car parked bounce each corner up and down till you get it really moving then stop and see how many times it keeps bouncing before it stops. shouldnt be more then 3.

you should really be able to tell the difference between even the lightest backfire and suspension noise. If its suspension noise the sound will be god awful in extreme cases. Sometimes just manually bouncing the car wont tell you. Take it over a couple of good speed bumps. That should tell ya if its the shock being blown. Also check the springs. They might not be sittn right.

Could also be your upper control arm bushing or a bushing broken inspect them also.

it's not backfire at all. I know what that sounds like and it's not it. My car is slightly backfiring every now and then. Its not that thats making the noise though

Does the sound happen at other times besides speeding around somebody...? If its just old and squeking then spray some water on it and that should loosen up some of the dirt/grime and make it a little quieter.

I only heard it twice. It literally sounds like a tire popped. Loud as all hell. You can hear it clearly over the radio. Kinda like gunfire too, i guess. I havent had time to check it. I did notice though, that when I go over a speed bump slowly and quietly, you can actually hear the shocks compress... hard to explain. Sounds like air coming out, then back into the shock. Are you supposed to be able to hear that? Maybe it is time for some lowering springs, shocks, and camber kit. Grr, no money. Thanks
