hi

I have an 87 trans am with the 305, is it worth upgrading the 305 or should i drop in a 350 or 383?

the 305 is an innefficient engine. For your time and money, you will get much more power from a 350 or 383.

example- if you buy a set of headers/ exhaust and a good intake, you will see more power gains form the 350 or 383 than you would the 305, let alone have more overall power. The 350 has a better rod to stroke ratio than the 305 . It is easier for the engine to make more power. This is why there are tons of aftermarket parts for the 350 engine. without getting into it too deep- the 383 is a stroked 350 . it offers the user even more torque.

now, knowing the 350 and 383 are better engines to modify, if power is your concern, then switch the engines. don't even consider the 305 unless you wish purposely build a 305 for the sake of having a built 305 or numbers matching engine.

However, if you wish to retain the stock fuel injection, abide by smog laws (assuming you have them) and keep the car legal for street use, (or keep the car "original) then modifying the 305 may be your only choice.

you need to decide which is more important: power or law abiding compliance.

Me- I choose power. Good luck with your ride!
