Ok ya i have a 97 lumina ls

and currently i have my portable cd player hooked up through a cassete tape thing, and im sick of having to always turn off the player (or itll run down my batteries in the cd player) since i dont have a car adapter for it

i wanna get a new cd player, probly this

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7044067&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03066&id=1099397002981

i was wondering, how do i install it? they have those shim kits and stuff dont they? does best buy or circuit city have em?

also will it look really bad?

i checked car domain and all the pics i saw of cd players in the luminas stick out a few inches

so ya how do i install it? and how do i take out the old one?

and with the wiring are all the speakers and power connected through one wire and i just plug it into the new cd deck?

they make installation adaptors so the radio fits the hole in your dash, and wiring adaptors to plug into your factory harness. Many aftermarket radios have a deeper mounting depth than your factory unit, so the installation adaptor may stick the new radio out an inch or 2, whether or not it's ugly is subjective.

hey, I found spray paint to match my interior and painted my install shim kit. It looked pretty nice. And sorry to tell ya, but Dual cd players suck. I had one, and it always frickin skipped especially when cold. I ripped it out and installed a Pioneer. You'ld be better off to find a remanufactured pioneer head unit on ebay than that crappy brand new dual. Kenwoods and alpines are also good cd players. As for you shim kit, yeah, paint it to match, and the kit you can get a wall mart, and it will come with instructions to make it fit perfect in you car. Also get a wire harness for your car to plug the deck straight to your factory plug. I hate to mention it, but gm's antenna plugs are smaller then standard aftermarket, so you will also have to buy an antenna adapter. I got the whole set up at Target for 14.99. at Wall mart you have to get them seperate for about 10 bux each. You do the math. Good luck.

Also my sisters boy friend got the SAME dual cd player that i linked and wanted to get at best buy, free installation, hahaha, o well guess thatll save me from getting mad when its cold :)

but ya he said its free installation at best buy

in order to take the old head unit out i have to take out like the whole dash dont i?

is sony, JVC, and jensen good brands? (all them look the same, dual has good looks but ya if its crap quality fuk it)

I'm liking the Sony from Circuit City and the Kenwood from Best Buy. I'm sure you might even be able to find those cheaper on ebay or something. Just my opinion though, in the end, it's up to what you want.

save yourself some hassle and get the low model Alpine. Like $160. all those other ones will break. Everyone i know uses Alpine head units and all of them, even the cheapest ones, are awesome, no problems. avoid motorized ones because they have a greater chance of breaking.

sorry, I took it out. But yes, target has wall what you need in oun packege. your dash will all come off. there are 2 scres in your driver kick panel, take them out, and then just start pulling gently to pop the dash off. Put the gearshift in 1 all the way down and set the e-brake, you might have to do a lot of figiting with the tilt wheel, but its possable to get the dash off. sony are ok, dual and durabrand are crap. Mine was a pioneer deh-p6500 it was awesome. good luck with everything. post anymore ???? you may have.

in my opinion, not to go aginst what others say, sony isnt very high end. If you looking for quality, probably like alphalanos said, go with alpine. And also, like I said, try ebay for refurbished ones. They are the ones that something has alrady gone wrong, they were brought back to the factory, and completly redone. Look at it this way, if a cd player has a weakenss, if you buy a refurb, the weakness has already been exposed and fixed. Also, they are a lot less expensive, and can be a lot better quality. In other words, what would you rather put in your car.... A brand new cheap cd player ($150.00) or a used thats been completly cleaned redone and repaired, is better quality, more features, and costs about the same, if not less. (150.00-200.00). Your decision I guess. I will post some nice cd players I find on ebay in a few moments. Take a gander at them. Oh, yeah, Dont go by if the web site says it fits or not. If its single din size, it will fit with the correct mount. which was the one you had found at wal-mart. double din also fit, although requre a different mount.

Just to give you a little more idea about whats out there. DONT BUY WALL MART SHIT. Only the install brackets and wires. Companies make cheap units to sell to wall mart for discount prices. trust me, you'ld be better off buying refurbs and used units over ones from wall-mart and even best buy for that matter. They boast free installation, but you are actually paying for it. The unit price is always more than anywhere else. And plus they are so easy to install, you can wire them toghether and set the bracket up via the instructions at your kitchn table, and spend an hour dismantling your car, put it in and back toghther. Its very easy. I've dont it for so many friends. Plus so many times for my car(s). Good luck, and let us know how you end up turing out, and what you end up buying.

tblake
09-14-2005, 09:54 PM
um, I dont know about the panasonic, I believe its multicolored lcd, probably all sorts of shades of blue. You can probably look it up on panasonic.com for more specs. but anways, Right now I put factory back in. Its all I need for now. Saving my money for one of them new chevy impala's with the 300 horse small block V8. who needs gas milage anyways? Ha Ha Ha.

Yes, I race with everything that pulls up next to me at the lights. Only lost a few times. never to a riceburner. "Beating a rice burner is like doing a fat chick, you dont brag about it." ha ha. I only modified the intake, and added a K&N panel filter. Other than that, nother performance wise. Not sure about the cd players, can you match up the model numbers or something?

Bboy_Jon
09-14-2005, 11:50 PM
i think there just older versions or somethin

ya i always race at the stop lights, but really whenever i pull up, we dont really "race" i do, but they probly dont think im trying to race until i peel out

might i add, luminas can peel out really nicely

yours probably burns them nicely. Mine doesnt..... anymore. I just put new tires on and they hook right up. In a way its a plus, on the other hand, when people say, burn them, I cant. O well. You must have the 3100sfi with the better flowing plenum and the aluminum heads. Thats what I've got. Very good motor, and 60,000 miles on mine, and no blown intake gasktes yet. Knock on wood. take it easy.

i know my car pretty well.

i have made my own microcontrolled OBD2 interface specifically for Lumina (VPW protocol) so that i can hook my laptop or my pocket pc with my car and check all the sensor readings while driving or parked...since my device is compatible with many software already availble for free in the market, thats why i never faced a problem checking anything in my car.

i keep her well....even a very minor problem.

have you ever tried to connect your laptop or pocket pc with your car through obd2 connector while you are driving?....if not, then you are missing something bigtime.

if you go to Circuit city stores, buy a CD deck over $100 its a free isntallation. mine i could have gotten done but i was like screw it... not worth my time. it will take a few hours but hey free install :D

Bboy_Jon
09-17-2005, 02:07 PM
well thing is, at best buy the one i want (150 on ebay) is 250, so screw the free installation lol

i have a 3100 v6 thats all i read on the engine lol

uhh ya i found an amp my dad bought for a dollar, its like 10 w or somethin, could i use it? with a woofer?

my dad has this single 12 inch i think pioneer woofer with a box already, and he has a smaller box with 2 6 inch woofers, and he has a big ass box with 2 12

could the amp handle one of those?

edit: also the kit at target would be with all the other car stuff?

and for getting the dash off, whats the kick panel?

does the dash come completly off or will the steering wheel block it?

ok so the kick panel is basically, right under the steering wheel? i saw the screws lol

umm, could you take a pic of the box of the din kit/wiring harness box? so i know what to look for?

Bboy_Jon
09-18-2005, 04:15 PM
ok i went over to target today and found the din kits, thing is theres 3 of them

Theres

Universal import (which im pretty sure isnt for luminas)

GM

and

Chrysler/AMC/jeep

do i get the GM one?

edit:
man im so stupid i just checked the amp again and its 70w!!! x2

theres a scratch right at the bottom of the 7, and lookin at it real quick its like a 1 but i checked again and its 7!!

so ya can a 70w amp run any of the subs?

heres my amp (exact same thing)

http://cgi.ebay.ca/MOSFET-70Wx2-AUDION-CROSSFIRE-AMPLIFIER-CFA142-70x2-AMP_W0QQitemZ5804852264QQcategoryZ18796QQcmdZViewI tem

tblake
09-18-2005, 11:29 PM
yes, that will work with your sub. As for your stereo mounts. Your car is a GM, so I'm pretty sure the GM install kit would be the one to get. Read the instructions on how to set it up, it snaps together in some pieces and once you snap them together, they dont come apart. On your car, there are 2 screws by the drivers feet. Take those out, and just leave the kick panel hang there. Tilt the wheel all the way down, and set the e-brake, and turn the key on, and put the gearshift all the way down in 1. Then grab firmly the dash trim, and pull gently, it should pop off with a little effort. You will have to to a little dinking around with the tilt wheel and jimmy rigging it out, but it will come out. Then there are 2, 7mm bolts I believe holding the stock radio in. pull those, and unplug and pull the radio out. Replace it with your new deck, and put it all back together. I've boceom so used to doing mine, it only takes 15 mins. good luck.

Bboy_Jon
09-18-2005, 11:38 PM
k so the gm kit comes with the antena adapter and the wiring harnesses? (its the 14.99 one)

and the screws are by your knees u mean? or are they really by your feet/pedals? ive only noticed the ones by the knees

But ya ok so after unscrewing the screws, that piece should hang there, then i turn the car on and leave it on? or can i switch it off? then do i just let the bigger dash hang? or can i slip it around the steering wheel?

also ill need a amp wiring kit for the amp correct? Should i just get that on ebay? can you link me to a good one?

also do you have an amp? Wheres a good place to ground? and is there a good hole in the firewall that i can pull my power cable through? and to get the cable to the trunk, would i have to take out the rear seats?

ALso could i mount the amplifier on the rear deck? (the part in the back of the car (not int he trunk) thats right at the top of the seats where the speakers are conencted? could i mount the amp on the other side (inside the trunk) or would the heat get to it, ya i read about that , could i mount it on the inside of the vehicle?

or should i just mount it to my sub box? i could just mount it to a piece of wood correct? i dont really feel like drilling into the car

richtazz
09-19-2005, 07:16 PM
I made the mistake of buying a sony f7700 stereo because of Sony's brand reputation and the fact that it plays MP3 encoded discs. BIG MISTAKE. The sound is crap at any high volume, and you have to turn it up past half way to hear it over road noise. IT has on-screen graphics and video, but you can't download your own video clips, and the display washes out terribly in the sun. I suggest going with a Pioneer or Kenwood unit tht doesn't have the hideaway face, as they are known to be problematic. The Pioneer Deh-P47dh and Deh-P77dh both fit GM's dash opening without an adaptor, have remote control, and have variable crossovers to keep you speakers from rattling.

Bboy_Jon
09-19-2005, 07:46 PM
hey tblake do you have aim or somethin? i could use some help, AIM me at breakerdawgbob

I dunno where a hole in the firewall is, how to get the wire from my trunk through my back seats and stuff

tblake
09-19-2005, 08:55 PM
yes! um, no I dont have aim, sorry. I have MSN Messenger though. If you would like, add me tb_class_of_2005@hotmail.com. On to your other post, yes, those are the screws you want out, by your knees. I dont mean start the car, just turn it to on, so you can move the gearshift to 1. It would be hard to do your job if the dash trim bezel isnt removed. especially with your amp install. As for the wires, as far as things go, its not competition, so I wouldnt worry about it. A wire is a wire. Stay away from those crappy agu fuses. The ones that look like tubes, the blade type is much more durable. You can pick up the kit at wall-mart. Your amp isnt too big, so I'd say 10 guage power wire would work, however if you plan on upgrading, you'ld be better off to go thicker, I myself would put in maybe 8 guage. No, there is no room behind your cd player for your amp. Your sub box would be the best place to put it. Ground to solid metal. Dont use a factory bolt unless absolutly necessary. Drill a hole, sand off the paint, and bolt the ground tightly. As for the firewall, If its like mine, there is a rubber grommet by the brake booster that (what looks like) a throttle cable comes through. If you take a wire coat hanger and unfold it and push it through that hole, then look on the inside of the car, maybe you will want to remove that kick panel, the coathanger should be pushed through, just securly tape your wire to it and pull it back through. Then just hook to the posative Jump start post. Um, yeah, it should take a little while, maybe a couple hours. If I forgot any questions let me know. And make absolute sure you put a fuse in that power wire as close to the battery as possable. I repeat FUSE THE POWER WIRE!!! I've seen so many dumbass kids not fuse their amp power wires and have their trunk start on fire cause the power wire shorted to ground and there was not circuit protection. Could have been totally avoided buy just adding a simple fuse. A 30 amp fuse should work for you amp.

Bboy_Jon
09-19-2005, 09:07 PM
hmmm

dont amplifier wiring kits (from walmart i dunno) come witht he fuses?

where exactly is that hole? i have no clue what the brake booster is lol

and where did you drill the hole? if i drill the hole id just screw a regular bolt (how about a machine screw) into the hole?

o ya and to remove the seats (do i have to do that?) do i just take out the 2 black bolts in the front of the seat?

Bboy_Jon
09-19-2005, 11:37 PM
K i got another question, with the GM kit from target (thats what i need to get right? not the amc/chrysler/jeep)?

and ya it comes with the wiring harness so how do i wire it up? is it just plug in one set of wires to the ones in the kit? to the headunit?

tron1989
09-20-2005, 05:31 AM
If you have not purchased a head unit yet, look at Crutchfield, they will send you every thing you need (wiring harness & adaptor plate) to install the unit along with detailed instructions for the same price as getting it at circuit city or best buy. The installation is pretty simple. Just pull the front dash cover off then you will have acess to the bolts to remove the unit. (I have found that put the car in L will help you get the dash cover out easier.

Bboy_Jon
09-20-2005, 12:38 PM
what is L?

should i mount the amp in the trunk or on the inside ontop of the rear deck?

i cant seem to figure out where i can slide the cables through the seat, if i pull back the carpet (which id have to do to get to the wires anyways, could i see the hole in the seats?)

L is Drive low

tblake
09-20-2005, 04:35 PM
the low he is referring to is moving the gearshift all the way down to 1 so you have enough room to shimmy the dash panel out. The wiring is pretty straight forward, you match the red wire from the deck wire harness to the red wire on your car wire harness. Yellow to yellow, black to black, green with black stripe to green with black stripe. Its easy, then it just plugs your deck straight into your car. I recommend soldering and shrink tubing, however crimps will work also, or even electrical tape for that matter. As for the amp wires going to the trunk, you can sneak through towards the top of the back seat (where the 6x9's are mounted.) maybe just remove that hush panel on the inside and you'll see what I mean.

Bboy_Jon
09-20-2005, 10:36 PM
are the conenctors each individual? or are they conencted to a giant connector plug? and whats the hush panel?

Bboy_Jon
09-21-2005, 03:16 PM
at walmart the amp wiring kits are

12 for a 225w kit

20 for a 550

24 for a 1100

none come with the battery connectors though

k heres my amp

http://www.cardomain.com/item/ALPMRV100M

basically 100-150w depending on how much voltage and how many ohms your running

so that 225w amp kit would work? i didnt see any battery terminals so where can i get them? (locally)

somone told me i need converters for the door chimes (the chimes that go off when the door is opened and the keys in teh ignition)

where do i get that?

and the amp has a

speaker level input

its a 4 pin plug (square) and theres channel 1 and 2, left and right whats that for?

or a refurb, for 146? both are the same head unit

ok i figured out how to route my wires to the trunk (btw i couldnt figure out how to lift the hush panel, but ya i found holes that lead to the trunk at the end of the panel), one question though, How the hell do u get wires through the hole in the firewall (the rubber grommet hole is sooo small)

and how the heck do i get wires (the speaker and turn on wires) to the head unit? like how do i route the wires from the amp in the trunk to the front of the car and behind the head unit?

on the tracking it says it should arrive friday, but whenever i order computer stuff using fedex, it says itll show up one day, but it always shows up a day early, so hopefully itll be the same

ANyways, what color should i paint the din kit? my interior is beigeish and my exterior is maroon lol

ok people

i tried my alpine amp, didnt work

THe old amp worked, after moving the wires around a bit but then it stopped working, and itll light up every so often (the power led) but it wont stay on

so wtf?

is the fuse (the one that is near the battery) suppose to be tight? because i stuck it in, and i can pull it out super easy, shouldnt it be hard to pull out?
