sub setup in spyder.

So while it's not the most accepted way to install a sub in a spyder it did work. And it does sound nice.. Pictures to come later once I clean up wiring...

Basically It took about 6 hours to do. I installed a JL 10w6 10" In under the convertible top area.

This doesn't cover wiring of anything but if your using the stock infinity system with line level out box, yellow is the positive wire on the back speakers.

With the top down I removed the back seats. Also the trunk back wall, I removed all the electronics from behind the back seats. The object is to fit the entire sub/holder in under the top. you won't get a box in there, you have to build it as you go... The cross members won't come out.

Forget pushing anything through the trunk area and in, it's too small. Instead work with the interior car's hole. I placed 2 boards together on piano hinge and pushed them through the opening. The upper board had the hole cut in it for my sub (note this was all premeasured to fit my sub)... Next I placed weather stripping in under the front of the lower board, onto the raised part of the car's body to keep it from vibrating.

I then screwed the bottom board into the clips that are already in the body of the spyder (I guess for dealer options).. slid the speaker through the back hole (trunk side), and lowered it into the support housing, I unfolded the support housing as I went, next I used a phillips on an a ratchet to secure the sub. At this point you will have an angle with the sub supporting the back (this sub is big....) Make two side supports to prop up the front to keep it from vibrating. I used construction cement (comes in a calking tube) to secure wood supports and then screwed it in. Make sure everything is tight else it will rattle, use Weather stripping anywhere it touches metal.

My sub has about an inch clearance from the top's area when it is down, it does not rattle the glass that it's audible. It does not hit the top at any time.

Wired it all up and placed everything back in place (keep track of the electronics).

Considerations:

1) not really a box, but it sounds very nice once you put the back paneling on to the trunk. It points the sub into the cabin. The space is too small to meet JL's requirement for a closed box for this sub. Maybe a smaller sub would work better here. But I got the JL 10w6 10" for dirt cheap, good sub too!
2) no trunk rattle (CD of Nine Inch Nails playing fairly loud, so that it shakes the car)
3) It would be nice if you have a small enough amp to fit in there. Mine is a bit too big with the wires connected. Ideally you could place it next to the sub.. (I have a jl 500/1). Instead I mounted it in the trunk, hanging off the back wall secured into the metal at the top. If you were replacing the stock stereo I guess it could go under the passenger seat. But I like the stock unit. I originally had it on the base of the trunk but that took up too much room, next I tried to mount it to a board vertically. The board idea worked well but then the spare isn't too accessable. You would have to carry the tools to remove the amp with you or have triple a run you a phillips :)
4) I still have most of my lack of trunk left. I can fit in my RC airplane still which was my biggest concern as the amp is the only thing mounted in the trunk (+ cd changer)..
5) You can take a power wire through a grommet in the firewall that is behind the battery on the Spyder. Remove the battery and you will see it (it's fairly large). I poked a hole in with a screw driver and fished the power wire through. Worked out well... it comes into the passenger side of the compartment. Don't wiretie anything to your wiper fluid tube that runs up the passenger side of the car. That would be bad if it was too tight.
6) If the area where your sub is leaks that would be bad... Mine doesn't (yet) so I'm okay for now. We shall see when winter comes. I park outside..

This post is kinda pointless without pictures. But I had time to type it and will post pictures later.
