Tranny woes

Hey gang, looking for help here. Wife came home yesterday and the 96 w/ 89k on it would not shift into reverse. It would go from park to drive only, missing neutral also. It seemed as if the shift indicator had a forward drive gear for everything except Park. The shift indicator position was not matching up with the proper gear position either.

I could put it into neutral if the car was not running.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

linkage on either end of the cable...

take a look under the hood to see if the problem is at the tranny. if not then you will have to look under the console. hopefully its not an internal tranny issue but it sounds like its just the button on the shifter not working properly
