Burnt clutch is the worst smell in the world. That smell was the fiber being torn and burnt off the clutch which is not good at all. If it catches at the top like your saying than chances are that it won't last too much longer. Whe the clutch disc beigns to get low on fiber it begins to lock up more at the top of the pedal. First i would try adjusting the clutch cable by turning the cable that connects to the tranny. When you adjust it do it half a turn or so at a time. If that dosen't help you and by the sounds of it your clutch is getting crappy than you'll need a new one. Thank your friend.
