need answers

i jut got my 92' rs camaro. it has been runnin great w/ a new motor n brand new trans. the only problem i hv w/ it now is when im sittin at a red light or just completely stopped n i gun it all i hear is a thumpin noise. i hv no clu as 2 wut it could b. some1 thinks its the driveshaft. but i hv no idea.. ne thoughts?

Not to be a dick but I do prefer english myself. :wink: I think what he ment is that when he tromps on it from a stop, he get's a big thump seeming to come from the rear end.

The tranny mounts are made partially of a hard rubber, and when you crack it, this is exactly what will happen.

sounds like the problem im having lol....would it be possible to break the tranny mount from bottoming out? when i get on it i can feel like something tapping under the car...at first i thought it was the exhaust got ripped loose but it seems okay....

not really, there's a cross brace that runs perpendicular to the trans, from one sub-frame to another. The trans mount is located between the trans and the cross-brace. Over time the mounts fatigue, and torque eventually snaps them.

You can't really tell if they are snapped or not unless you support the trans with a jack and remove the brace, and then the mount will probably fall in half.

Alright tuff guy. Seletive reading I guess. If you noticed in his post he described a noise coming from where it would hit. I'm simply saying that you'd have a difficult time actually seeing that it's busted unless you do as I described.

It might be a bad u joint.

IF you stomp it from a stop and hear/feel a clunking coming from somewhere in the middle of your car, get under there and check the tranny mount and torque arm bushing. If broken, replace with poly and don't worry about that problem again.

ok well im 16n this is my 1st car..its a 92' rs camaro..n im just not sure wut was goin on. bc i could get on it w/ no real problem. now when i try to get on it i get the thumpin noise. it lasts not long mayb 4 3 seconds then it is gone. i hv no idea as to wut it is. but wut does this sound like n how much 2 fix?

i replaced mine about 2 weeks ago. its like a 30 minute job at the most. jack the car up, put on jack stands, support transmission, take bottom middle bolt out of crossmember, unbolt 4 outter bolts that connect crossmember to subframe, let the crossmember fall (or catch it), umbolt the 2 bolts holding mount to transmission, bolt new one up and bolt cross member up and then the middle bolt to the mount, then lower car and drive. when your old mount come out if it was the problem it will be in 2 peices. a new one thats the same costs like 8 bucks and a polyurathane one is like 20 i think. it takes no real skill to do. just some socket wrenches.

when i would stop my trans would slide up just enough to bounce the y ipe around and it was annoying. i dont think my 2.8 is fast enough to twist my tranny far enough for the u joint to hit the body. but it is possible. what engine u got?

3.1L v 6. when i stop nothin slides up. just when i gun it when im completekly stopped i hear a thump 4 3 seconds then its gone

if you jack up yur car and you can wiggle your transmission around with a crow bar then your mout is shot.

I'd say it's the mount, I broke a few when I had an '89 (didn't replace them with poly).:smile:

88camaroproject is right, it's really not that hard to change, I changed my first one at 16 too - had no clue what I was doing. :cool:
