Oh, sorry for the long post... it's been awhile since I've posted anything worth while. So please bear with me.
So, I call up a friend. It's early evening, been sitting around all day being lazy. Ate two bowls of cereal and watched some TV... yeah, it was a real productive day for me.
And I was ready to get out of the house. I head over to his place, we decide to take on a plan we'd concieved.
Take a local street, and drive it all the way to wherever it goes. This particular street goes on for miles... starting from the coast and goes north right into the Mountains.
For those in SoCal, I'm talking about Hwy 39 or simply known as Beach Blvd.
Anywho, we start our cruise by getting the assorted road trip goodies like Sodas and Candies.
This Asian guy in a BMW 330i comes up next to us and guns it. We look at each other and at first we both thought it was a '99 Civic Si. It being a coupe and all we didn't pay much attention to it at first... I pulled up next to him and put the clutch in and gave him a fat rev. Letting him know I'm game.
He declined, we were disappointed. He then shot onto the freeway that was coming up. Fucker.
Skip forward a few, we meet up with a White 350z. Taking off from a light I'm cruising along and the 350z is kinda lingering behind. Then as we get next to him he guns it. We both are kinda like, What the hell is his problem?
Wondering why he waited for us to get near to gun it. He didn't go very far. I downshift to 4th and give her a little gas to catch up. Pacing him, he doesn't bite.
Soon the road makes a split, and we go to follow the 350z. The 350z makes a sharp right hand turn where the road T's off. I follow, he takes the turn fast so I figure he's game to play.
Now, Normally this type of fast right hand turn wouldn't be too much a problem in the Camaro. It doesn't handle very well, but if you use body roll and understeer to your advantage the soon-to-come over steer following the turn wouldn't be a problem. Here in lies the problem of the car design, not so much the drivetrain. But the interior design.
Who the fuck puts a cup holder right behind the shifter of a stickshift car? Automatics, sure Ok. You don't touch the shifter all that much. But to put a cup holder directly behind the shifter severly inhibits ones ability to manuever the vehicle.
So as I go to downshift to 2nd gear for the turn my arm/elbow get all stuck on my 20oz bottle of Coke which I jammed into the cup holder to keep it from flopping around as I drove. Since it was jammed in to the holder it didn't really budge when I shifted which caused the car to bobble and take the turn with the grace of a dieing elephant.
In what should of been a text book turn in with a hint of over steer right hand turn. Looked like joke.
Needless to say I tossed my coke into the back of the car to keep it from messing me up further. But, as fate would have it... the 350z didn't want to play at all. So in frustration as he turned into a neighborhood I gave him a nasty rev.
Continuing our drive, my friend got the bright idea of stopping by a local shop. Some of you may of heard of the place. http://www.rbmotoring.com/
Turns out at 10:30 at night, there were folks there. We come in and start talking to one of the guys my friend knows there. This is also the home of Igor's GT-R race car. Which was there, and I got to see in person for the first time. It is very much a race car, and shows it. Overall the car is rough, but it's all business. Which is cool.
Although, there was a R34 Skyline GTR sitting right behind it that was a show car. So, I got to see both Show and Go Skylines five feet from each other.
We spent about 45 minutes there bullshitting all things JDM.
On with our drive!
At this point, being in the presences of all those Skylines, including the yellow R33 Skyline (aka Big Bird) from the first Fast n Furious movie. Which maybe in the third movie. It currently has no motor or interior, it has one of those dealer stickers on the windshield that says "Gas Saver" as a joke.
We decided to hit the freeway and head home, getting onto the freeway. We get cut off by two latinaa chicks in a Toyota Corolla. We pull along side and they're eyeing us like candy. So, being assholes we decide to have some fun too, as they repeatedly cut us off by getting ahead and getting in front of us. We would get around and pull along side, which wasn't hard to do me being in a Z28 and them in a Corolla.
My friend would wave to them, or do the hand motions of 'banging' with one hand in a circle with the other hand banging it with a finger. The look on their faces was priceless. Afterall, they started it... give us those looks of "heyyy pappii"
While playing with the girls, a 2005 Dodge Charger R/T goes by in the fast lane with some form of exhaust. Sounded good, after maybe another 5 minutes of foolin around with the girls they go to get off. I decide to hop in the car pool lane and play catch up.
I've had my eyes on these Chargers for a while now, wanting to see what they'll do in the 'real world'. I hit 85-90mph in the carpool, cruising at sub century mark speeds we catch him in roughly 2-3 minutes.
I slow down, and as I pass I give him a nice fat Rev. Traffic kept us from doing much of anything. We stay near the Charger through traffic manuevering around him checking out the car. Traffic starts to lighten up and now we're behind him we hear this loud exhaust just get on it.
We exchange looks, I point forward with a quizicle look and my friend completes my thought. "Is that him?"
We're confused, cause this exhaust was now loud and you can hear it trying it's best to move the car it's attached to. But it just wasn't going anywhere.
We have our fair share of laughs, and he now gets 'serious' as he starts to move around a few cars for the open freeway ahead.
I follow in 5th gear cruisin along at about 75-80mph. We keep hearing the guy hamming the gas, but the damn thing just isn't going anywhere. At one point I had to let off the gas to keep from rear ending him.
I move over to the carpool lane again, he moves over to the far right lane and we're pacing him as we hear his "Hemi bro!" going for all she's worth. Finally he starts to get closer by moving over in the lanes towards us. At this point I'm maybe 3-4 car lengths ahead with my hand on the shifter ready to go to 4th gear incase he decided he wanted to go again. We had a clear freeway for about 3 miles.
He stayed back...
Which was really disappointing... I didn't think those Chargers were that slow. Honestly, it was childs play. Made all sorts of noise, but didn't go anywhere.
Although, my friend and I did agree it sounded cool... but that's about it.
To quote my other friend about the new Mopars, who's a big Mopar fan of the old days:
"Mopar is like a bad handjob that you don't get to nut to... it's just a waste of time."
Amen to that.
I'm so over the hype of the new Hemi motor, 345hp isn't all that impressive these days. GM was making those numbers 6 years before the "Hemi dude!" with the LS1 in 1997.
Somebody dyno'd their Charger R/T to 276hp and 311tq. That's a 69hp drop from the manufacturer 345hp... either the new Dodges are highly inefficient in their drivetrain or they don't make the power.

I just don't take drinks. Although, the girl has mastered using the space in the door right by the speaker for a drink.

Sounds like a fun night. And I've been saying those Hemi's are overrated for awhile now. And apparently, they are, because 276 rwhp would only be about what, 310 at the flywheel?

You're thinking of the Dodge Magnum, that's the Wagon... The Charger is a 4 door sedan like the Chrysler 300C.

Good kill Matty. I think everyone knows that Dodge overrated the Hemi. 340 horsepower, my ass. Those cars run low 14's, when they should be running high 13's. I believe some dude dynoed a Dodge truck w/ the hemi to the tune of 260+whp, what a joke. The commercials really got all the mopar guys in an uproar to buy the hype. Too bad too, cause now Dodge is killing off the SRT-4, with it sick ass motor, so that they can sell that pathetic P.O.S. "Hemi" motor. Oh well :(

i thought i heard about a magnum that dynoed at 255rwhp... the charger is basically a two door chrysler 300 tho... im not a big fan either. i got a similar cup holder issue too but i have two so i can still fit a tall cup in the rear one. i wonder how bad a charger would beat me, it would probably be bad tho...

The SRT-8's are a low 13/high 12 car. Guy here in NJ ran a 12.9@109 with a stock SRT-8 300, like 500 miles on the car. The SRT-8 Charger is supposed to be a couple hundred pounds lighter than the 300, should be nice when it comes out this fall. Not to shabby for four door family cars.
But I do agree that the Hemi is over-hyped, if one more person asks me if my truck has a Hemi, I think I'm gonna hit 'em :iceslolan

I've heard the 6.1 (?) L hemi puts out 425 though. It still weighs 4000 pounds though.
Yup you heard right the 6.1 L hemi has 425 HP and 420 TQ. Car and Driver tested a Magnum SRT8 and compared it with the numbers from a road test 69 Road Runner with a Hemi. Here's the numbers.
Plymouth Road Runner
426 CID (7.0L) Hemi
Weight: 3938 pounds
0-60: 5.1
1/4 mile: 13.5 @ 105
Dodge Magnum SRT8
370 CID (6.1L) Hemi
Weight: 4379 pounds
0-60: 5.1
1/4 Mile: 13.6 @ 106
The Magnums are the heaviest of the 3 LX bodies, the 300C is about 100 or so pounds lighter and the Charger the lightest of them all. Theoretically it could be possible a Charger SRT8 might make high 12's or a very solid 13 flat still fast by todays standards but respectable considering the mass. I just wish they would ditch the 2.82 gearing and put some decent performance gears in them to help them behemoths get some better accelleration.

matt even car and driver said it, if it aint the 6.1 srt-8 charger it's not even worth buying.
now i saw in i think it was motor trend that in 07 theres gonna be a Dodge Challenger coming out. with the 6.1 425hp 420lb being the standard motor in it.and its 2door they Might have the 5.7 in it but officials are talking about olny allowing the 6.1 in the Challenger

Who the fuck puts a cup holder right behind the shifter of a stickshift car? Automatics, sure Ok. You don't touch the shifter all that much. But to put a cup holder directly behind the shifter severly inhibits ones ability to manuever the vehicle.

I believe it was R&T or Motortrend that tested a 2006 Charger R/T with Road/Track Performance Group. It hit 60mph in 5.6 seconds which is pretty impressive. I think the four doors would be a little bit easier to forget about if there was a 6-speed manual offered!

yeah screw the "regular" hemi motors. the only new dodge, w/a a hemi, that i would buy is the charger/300c srt-8. i think those look downright sexy with the large wheels, and they actually put out in terms of acceleration. a lighter cadillac cts-v w/400 horsepower and a manual was only like a tenth ahead of the 300c at the end of the quarter mile. btw, both ran low 13's at about 109.

No offense Matty, but all I got out of your story was that you mostly just revved on everyone. :loser:
:grinno:
The SRT-8 looks incredible. I'd take one, especially if it's running high 12's to low 13's. How much to they run for?

Bah... I wouldn't of had to rev at em if they'd raced me. Each time the BMW and the 350z gunned it next to me irst but wouldn't back it up when I came to play.

The SRT-8 300's start at like $39K and are around $43-45K with some decent options. The SRT-8 Charger is supposed to start at $35K.

Dodge released pricing for the SRT-8 Charger. Base MSRP is $37,420. The destination fee is an additional $675-$725 depending on State. The dealers will probably mark it up like 10K like they did with the 300C SRT-8.

While Dodge certainly overhypes their Hemi cars on commercials, at least they are making more enjoyable cars to drive. They are finally starting to go back to the rwd, V8 cars that made American cars...well American. They also are dressing their cars up more with brighter colors and stylish decals as opposed to the bland garbage you just see everywhere on the road. I'm sick of the crap Chevrolet is putting out, and there isn't one car or truck they have right now that catches my interest save the Corvette. They put a V8 in the expensive Monte Carlo and Impala models, but so what its still fwd, and I hate the way those cars handle. Malibu is ugly as sin, Cobalt and Aveo, you gotta be kidding me. That HHR actually doesn't look too bad, but to me its just Chevy version of the PT Cruiser. Where do you go after your retro look gets old? I've hated their trucks since they went to the Avalanche front end. Screw Chevy and their garbage. Ford isn't really doing much for me either but I'm not going to go into that and make this post any longer then it needs to be.

Dodge WANTS people to buy a hemi charger.. It's all marketing bullsh*t..

There's no such thing as perfection when it comes to cars and engines, there's always room for improvement somewhere.

::glances at Titan::
I think that the new silvado front ends look nice, at least chevy didnt steal the shape from dodge like ford did on the F-series.
Ive been saying since i got into cars and realized honda's are slow that if it aint RWD it aint worth it. Untill I am married and have 2 kids I will never drive a FWD vehicle...even if i have to stick to trucks and SUV's.
and there is just something about stepping DOWN out of a nice looking truck... because it aint a truck if it sits on the ground
I would respect dodge a lot more if they didnt hype it all so. and save the Viper dodge has nothing uber impressive, save the cobra and GT 40 Ford has nothing uber impressive... it seems as though the Asian market is steping up and the europeans are staying up there.

i see this thread hasnt had any posts in a couple days, but my dad just bought an 06 hemi charger today. i too am a chevy die hard, but i gotta give credit where credit is due. when i sat behind the wheel the first thing i noticed was a nice big hood. the nose rolls a little when u turn like a big car with a V8 is supposed to. and while 340 horsepower isnt gonna set any records, its real easy to break the law in, i promise. in my house theres my parents, myself, a brother and 2 sisters. a camaro really isnt the most sensible family car. this car does both jobs convincingly. the engine is smooth and revs great. i love the LS1 also, but wheres my '06 chevelle? paintin a car black and puttin another exhaust tip on it does not make it an SS. or how bout a torino from big blue? dodge is tryin and i cant fault them for that. o and those daytonas wit the stripes and fake scoops look like crap. ours is very understated in silver with no gaudy decals or badges and NO stupid useless spoiler. tho a 6 speed woulda been nice...
