2004 Propeller Shaft

Can anyone tell me exactly were this thing is at? Cannot find any grease fittings anywere on the drive shaft. Must this be taken apart to lubricate at per the maintenance req. Thanks

If you have a 2WD vehicle, then there are no grease fittings on the propellor shaft and the recommended greasing doesn't apply to you.

AFAIK, only the 4WD vehicles have grease fittings.

Yes it is a 2WD (Prerunner). Thanks for the info. You would think that they would have that info in the maintenance book. Just said to do it.

The 2004 Scheduled Maintenance Guide does say that under special operating conditions to "lubricate propeller shaft (PreRunner and all 4WD except Highlander and RAV4)". Look in the 2003 Tacoma Repair manual for a diagram that shows where the fittings are supposed to be, it's the same as the 2004.

It's in Volume II in the Propeller Shaft section on page PR-21. The bottom two drawings are for the Pre-Runner and rear 4WD shaft, middle is for a 2 joint shaft and bottom is for a 3 joint shaft.

My truck is an 04 normal 2 WD extra cab with SR 5 package So I cannot check but the shop manual says they have grease fittings. I have an 04 shop manual and I just looked it up.

I know some manufacturers used to install plugs in place of grease fittings, probably to save a few $$.
Maybe Toyota is doing the same. If so I would install grease fittings and make sure they are frequently lubed. Drive shaft problems show up on the forum due to lack of lubrication based on the inputs I have seen during the year I have been a member. Toyota dealers usually seem to recommend complete propeller shaft replacement instead of replacing components. expensive but easy.

Please let the forum know if the manual is wrong.

Yes, I guess I should have stated that out front, but IMO, you should install grease fittings and lubricate the fittings. Sorry, forgot to finish my post.

Your Prerunner should have the same drive shaft and u joints as the 4x4. There are quite a few fittings to grease. I remember seeing info on this subject on 4Runners.org.
