94 Regal takes long to start, struggles when gassed

I have a 94 Regal Custom coupe (3800 engine). I recently got a major tune up that included changing the ignition wires. The fuel filter was just replaced too. The problem I'm having is, when the car is cold, it takes about 10-20 seconds for it to start when I turn the ignition. When the car is warm and then turned off, it will turn back on right away when I turn the key (just as long as the car is still warm).

Sometimes when I am on the freeway, when I press the gas pedal with a certain amount of force, you can feel the car jerk a little as if the gas isn't continuiously flowing properly. More like it is flowing in "spurts". The take off is VERY slow. When I hit the freeway, I have to stay in the slow lane for about 10 seconds until my car gets up to the speed limit, then I can merge into the faster lanes. If I am heavy on the gas trying to speed up, the car will shut off.

Anybody have suggestions?

Two possibilities, fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. Change the fuel pressure regulator first, it is much cheaper than a fuel pump a lot easier too. If that does not cure the problem then the fuel pump may be bad. You can check the fuel pump and regulator with a fuel pressure guage, just connect it to the shrader fitting on the fuel rail. Pressure should be in the 45 to 55 psi range at idle.

You also need to check your fuel filter. A cloged filter will also starve you car of fuel. If you do put a fuel gauge on the rail, pull the vacumn off the reg. and notice if the reading fluxuates. It should about 10 to 15 lbs.
