Last week I ordered the rest of the parts that I need to install my carputer. As long as they all arrive on time the install should be done by next weekend.
Here is the list of parts being installed:

AMD XP 2800
Asus A7N-266-VM
1gig Ram
60GB HD
300w PSU
SBLive!
Sony DVD-ROM remote mounted to center console via USB
7" Lilliput touchscreen in-dash motorized monitor
Audiobahn AS69Q 6x9's
Audiobahn ABF25T 5.25's
Audiobahn ATB10AT powered sub
Cobra 12v 1600watt Inverter
Stinger SWCKH42 Multi-amp Wiring Kit W/1.2 Farad Cap (powering the sub and inverter)

Remote mounting the following switches to the center console:
Inverter on/off switch
PC Power/Reset switch
PC LEDs

All installed under a false floor in the trunk.

This will all be ran through my existing HU: Pioneer DEH-P770MP

The computer will be stripped of anything non-essential to windows operation and entertainment purposes. It will also run the program made by these folks: http://www.mediaengine.org/

I have been planning this install ever since I bought the car. I just finally got the funding from the wife =P
I'll try n get detailed pictures of the install and the finished project

Well, I was originally just going to go with a CD Changer...

Then I got to looking at the 3 extra PCs I had lying around the house and decided that I could just fill a hard drive full of thousands of MP3s and run it through the Head Unit. I'll be able to fit an ass-ton more music on a hard drive than I could fit into a CD changer. Also, with a full blown PC in the car I can take advantage of DVD, MPEG, AVI, Rear Mounted Cameras, Playstation - N64 - Genesis - SNES - NES emulators, etc etc. The possibilities are almost endless.

So the planning began.
Now, to see if it all works well together.

looks like you got yourself a nice project. I don't know if you've ever seen my site for my carpc in my old SL, Maybe it could be some help:

www.vtc.edu/users/crd04080/carpc

I have a vr-4 now, i don't know if i'll ever do another carpc or not. I might just get a double din nav/dvd/mp3 player. Good luck with your install.

how much exactly is an ass-ton

so how much more HP will that give you?

I figure it like this...60Gig HD should be able to hold approx. 4615 MP3s, given the average size of a 128kbps 44khz MP3 is 13mb.
Lets also say that the average CD holds 12 songs, and going whole hog would mean a 12 disc CD changer, or I would have about 144 songs in the cd changer.
So, I guess, an ass-ton of MP3s is about 4471 MP3s....

so how much more HP will that give you?

I am planning on 0 extra HP. However, if we follow rice-boy logic...
I am adding 4 led fans to cool the system and a subwoofer, plus the color on the screen face matches the other blue lights I have in the interior...so we are talking at LEAST 50 rice-boy HP.
I'm sure a dyno would prove that wrong tho.

Anyways, the screen came today and is partially installed.
Need to scratch build a surround for the units. I had to extend both the screen and the Head Unit out about 3" from the normal mounting location in order to allow the screen to extend fully.
However, it is hooked up electrically and I had the PC slaved to the screen and into the Head Unit...looks and sounds spectacular.
Waiting for the sub, inverter, and wiring kit to get the PC itself into the car.

I am thinking probably -1 or -2 it is adding weight, but I think it is pretty cool, and worth the weight. I would like to do something like that in my Stealth.

pfff your math sucks.
60gb hard drive minus about 7 gig because HD manufactures dont measure a real gigabyte, plus the OS. so figure 53gb. At 128kbps thats about a MB per minute. Assuming the average length of a song is 4min, you will get aprox 13000 songs.

all you need now is a diagnostic/tuner program for your car/computer and when people ask if there is an actual need for the carputer you can say yea

Do you know of a windows based one for the 3s?

I hope that 60GB hard drive you are looking at is a laptop hard drive... The PC ones do not like to bounce around and you are gonna have problems with data corruption...

If you where a real computer geek you would be ripping one out of a IPod...

Mounting the hard drive on it's side and cushioning it some eliminates most, if not all, HD corruption. Already researched it.

Bezel is now done for the HU and Screen.
Center console is installed again w/ the DVD-ROM installed.
All of the wiring is ran throughout the car.
Still waiting for the Sub and Inverter =/

Screen and Head Unit installed and bezelled - check
PC installed into trunk - check
False floor fabricated and installed - check
DVD-ROM installed in center console - check
Wiring ran - check
1.2 Farad Cap installed - check

Sub - still MIA
Inverter - still MIA

I will post pics of the install on Sunday. Even if the sub and inverter do not arrive by then =/ Will just post more after they are installed if thats the case.

isn't a 1600 watt inverter a little over kill?
