setting the timing

hey all, a quick question for everyone.
i know that if you are good enough, you can adjust timing with a vacuum guage and by ear, but i dont wanna mess anything up, and i do not believe my timing mark/dampner are on the car still. i dont know what who did to my car before i got it, but i cant see crap when i look down behind the water pump to check for pointer. thanks for the help everyone.
