Abs

My abs light is on... replaced the front drivers side rotor about three weeks ago... there was a problem with my pad, and it wore through the rotor, between where it attaches to the axle and where the pad rubs... the pad would clamp to the rotor, but the wheel could still spin freely... it was the weirdest thing. Anyway, gettin off track. I don't know if that could be the problem, but it's the only thing i can think of that i could have done to affect the system. It's only the ABS light that's on, my brakes work fine, it's just gonna screw me when the winter comes. Should I take this into a shop, or can I do a home-fix.

Did you open the bleeder screw when you pushed back the pad/piston during the rotor replacement. I've heard that if you don't you risk pushing any crud in the system into your ABS sensor. I haven't had this happen but I crack the bleeder anyway just in case.

Check to make sure you don't have any debri between the sensor and the hub. Sometimes metal shavings can be picked up by the sensor and cause interferance with it. I use a strip of a shop rag and wet it down with PB Blaster and place it on the hub. Then turn the hub so the rag gets pulled under the sensor and it pushes any debri out. Course my sensor is rivited onto the dust shield so I can't remove it that easily.

Check the wiring going to the wheel speed sensor.

Hey Guys! I cleaned my hub where the wheel speed sensor reads the wheel rotation. It was all kinds of gunked up in the teeth, and as JA no Y said, you can't remove the sensor. My question is, do you have to lubricate the gears after you clean them?

It appears the sensor magnets contact the hub teeth. I could see using a little grease, but with all the metal shavings that get in there, that would just collect shavings and dirt faster. To grease or not to grease?

I'm working on it because the ABS system was kicking in at every stop even on dry ground.

well my abs used to come on when it was dry out as well at slow speeds... like between 10-25mph. I think the problem was my bearings were wearing out causing particals to block part of the sensor. So since you just cant replace the bearings, or just the sensors i replaced the whole hub. problem went away after that.
