is it map sensor?

Hi I just wanna know if I am fixing the right thing. I have Eclipse RS 95.
Some time ago, I started having troubles with my RPM and starting the car. The check engine light was one so I went to get the code that showed it was EGR system. SO I had changed the whole sytem, solenoid and cleaned all the hoses. Few days later, the light was off. Unfortunately, I still had the same problems, even though it was not very often. Lets say 3 times a week mostly in the morning. I couldn't start the car but when I turned AC and radio off, it usually helped. SOmetimes, when it did not help, I had drive with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas. Then it was fine for rest of the day. Well today, I was going out in the morning and could not start. Then I was going the usual way using both feet. After some time the car started jerking like there was not enough of gas. When I wanted to go faster it was doing more so I had to drive very slow. Then when I stopped on the red light, the RPM went crazy, I could not drive fast and when took my foot off gas it just died. I took it to the nearest carshop. The engine light was on again and showed a code for Map sensor and Oxygen sensor. They said they cannot fix it because they were not able to get the parts. I left my car on the nearest McDonalds because it was kind of dangerous to drive. The car was going nuts. Now, I ordered the map sensor in Advance Auto Parts and will have tomorrow morning. Just want to know if the situation really caused the map sensor if there might be something else. What do you think? Thanks in advance

well, thats the route i would go. If the problem continues after replacing the map, reset the ecu, just disconnect the battery for 30 secs. It could be the o2 sensor, but closed loop operations dont start untell the o2 has reached 600deg. So, it really wouldn't explain the "hard-to-start" problem. Their is a cold start program the ecu goes into when its starts untell the o2 reaches 600deg. Like a power on self test that computers do before the CMOS is loaded into conventual memory and operating system loads.
Let us know.

Well, this is very common for RS. I have a RS and I have this problem too. The RPM's drop trying to stall the car and then jump up again. Usually happens in the morning or when car is still cold. I have come to the conclusion that it can be 2 major things: ECU or ICS. I am in process of replacing both, hoping the problem would be fixed.

Ok so I feel like a not so smart person right now...what is a map sensor? Where is it? and how much does it usually cost to replace one?

I thought about that too but since the check engine light says it is the map sensor, I figured out that might be the main problem.
But hten also, what about MAF sensor?

A map sensor is a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. It measures the pressure in the manifold and send that signal to the computer to let the computer know what kind of load is on the engine
I bought mine for $150 but heard you can find a cheaper one.
Also, it is pretty easy to replace it (as I was told).

MAP sensor is on the manifold, all the way on the passengers side. Easy to replace. Check DSM3D. Location and all.
Got the same problem. RPMS are low when first time starting the car for the day. The shoots up, then falls low. If you open the hood on my car and listen to the intake (CAI), you can hear the engine almost choking. It gets really loud right at the filter and intake, trying to suck in air, and its like there nothing there. As it sucks in more air then, the RPMs shoot up b.c there is then too much air. So the ECU adjusts for less air, making it choke again until the engine warms up and finds the happy medium. I've purposely done this test with CO2. Sprayed in, tried choking it, did the same. Engine has to be running under normal Operating Temperature in order for it to choke like that. Not sure exacly what will help solve that problem though.

Hi guys, I had very busy weeks behind me. I bought the map sensor just to found out, that it was not the one I needed. I have Eclipse 95 and everywhere you look for the map sensor, it shows you the different one. I am not sure why. After 4 days of looking, browsing internet and calling, I found the right one and waited for it to come. I was surprised since the car was driving well. RPM was low but OK and I started the car on the first try. I got it last weeke on Friday so I changed on Saturday and the car was like new. It was so alive and driving so good. Well, not for long time since it started dying again. There are times I start it without a problem but then it does not start and I have to have my foot on gas even while driving. After 30 mins of driving, it is OK but when I stop and want to start again, it just dies. Today, it was OK.
I had my fuel and oil filters changed, the map sensor is new, new egr valve and solenoid, ecu checked. The only thing that is not replaced yet is oxygen sensor 2 but it should not be doing that. What about "autochoke"?
I just wish anyone would know what is wrong with it

There could be a lot of reasons for car stalling and rpm's dropping. Mine had this problem too but I never drove with my foot on both the gas and brake. How does the car die if you have it in gear and press the gas ? Try to get a used ECU from a junk yard and maybe change your O2 sensor. Thats all i can think of right now. You changed a lot of things, is everything grounded? If you cant figure it out ,I would suggest selling it and getting a reliable car for your own safety. Eclipses can be very reliable or a money pit. Good luck I hope you find your problem and get it fixed :).

The ECU is fine. Whe I press the gas it is OK but when I take my foot off, it just dies. That is what I meant.
I was thinking about selling but the thing is I love the car maybe more than myself:) and there is so much money in it. I have all interior changed, new transmission and other parts a nd I just would not get over it. If I would want a newer Eclipse - 1999 ( I don't like the 2000+) than I would have to do everything again.
