Neutral Safety Switch...Girl asking

Hi everyone.
In reading thru this forum I have found answers to most of my questions. You are all a huge help. Now, I am having problems with my back-up lights not coming on, so after reading Brian Pawlak's explanation on how to clean the switch; I finally got the nerve after 3-4 days of wondering if it was something I could do. It was not easy as I am 5'1" & 110 lbs, but I got the switch out, cleaned it thoroughly (I hope it would pass Brian's inspection) and today I tried to put it back in. The switch will only go as far as the edge of the transmission pan & no further. If I read his instructions correctly; the vehicle should be in neutral. I have tried both Neutral & Park to no avail. I have looked to see if I am hitting the pan...No. I have taken it out & looked at everything again, line up everything & still no go. Only goes so far. What am I doing wrong? I don't own any jack stands so I do not have the Jeep elevated. It's kinda hard to put any leverage on it because of where the switch is located. If Brian or anyone else that has completed this procedure is reading this.....Please help.

Sorry for the ignorance, Dale. I have already read the jeepin forum & have gotten as far as trying to put back in. The other link you provided is an email address. Are you suggesting that I send them this question? Thanks for all the help. So far, this forum has been an enormous help to me.

Dale was referring you to the Jeepin site. The Jeepman600 email address is his.
As for your problem, I have not done this myself but all of the articles I've read indicate that the NSS should slide back on fairly easily. Did you clean the area of the transmission around the NSS? Run your fingers around the opening and feel for any dirt, sludge ,etc, that may have fallen in the hole, while you pulled the switch out.
If all is good, it sounds like you may not have the NSS lined up with the trans shaft. Rotate the nss safety switch and align the vertical groove on the manual valve shaft with the neutral standard line.

Thank you Saudade. I only cleaned the area around the switch prior to removing it. How can I clean it now without worrying about contaminating anything. I can't really tell that there is an opening. Just the shaft sticking out of the pan which is where the NSS goes. Any other ideas from anyone?

Neutral switch--- install-- Disconnect the shift linkage rod from the shift lever at transmission.
Rotate shift lever all the way rearward, then 2 detent positions to--N--
Position the switch on the valve shaft and install the adjusting bolt Finger-tight.
Instalthe washer and attaching nut and tighten the nut to 60 inch lbs. ( 7Nm.) but don't bend the tabbed washer yet.
Adjust the switch.
TO ADJUST SWITCH
Loosen the adjusting nut.
With transmission in neutral, rotate the switch to align the neutral standard line with groove on the valve shaft.
Hold the switch in this position and tighten the adjusting bolt to -108- inch lbs. (12 )Mn.
ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/15/40/44/0900823d80154044.jsp CHECK OUT THI PAGE HOPE IT WORKS
Bend the tabbed washer over the retaining nut.
Connect the shift rod.
Connect the switch wires
Check the switch operation, the engine should start in P and N only.

Wow, don't know if I can do that. Are there any pics anywhere that show me where the linkage is at? Thanks for your help, just need to know where it is located & what it looks like.

Just a quick note. I did the clean and lube of the NSS and for most vehicles all you may need to do is adjust the switch to make good contact and fix back up light problems. This was to include myself, even though I pulled the switch, after I got it apart it wasn't as dirty and gunked up as I thought. Probably could have just adjusted the switch and fixed my start problem and fix the back up lights not coming on. Just a suggestion before you pull the switch.

reopening an old thread but thats ok...
do you really have to disconnect the shift linkage? i mean it will only go on in one position so i dont see why you would have to?
if you do, will someone give me some more details please

If you put blocks on the tires so it will not roll and put the tranny in Neutral and make sure that the groove and line on the switch are lined up then no you do not have to remove the linkage. I recently removed cleaned and reinstalled the one on my 92 cherokee and did not remove the linkage as it was not necessary. But to make sure after you get the switch put back in put the tranny back in park and use a multimeter to ensure that a connection is between pins B and C in park and neutral to ensure that everything is lined up correctly.

Hopefully yours is fixed by now. I think you should jack it up though at least from the front. I did mine last year, but I don't think I could have done it without jacking it up. That would be painful and I enjoy working on cars, but don't like scooting on the ground. I worked at dealers for 25 years, but that is why they have a lift, so you don't get PO'd at working on cars.
Don't need to take off linkage, just have it in neutral. The hard part is getting it off. The tip for this is to put nut on slightly and pry it off with even pressure using the lip of the transmission.
