86 toy pu 4x4, 197K miles, rough start. engine 22R. I know very little about mechanics. I took my pu to repair shop. He said he blew out the fuel lines, cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the float and pin. It ran well the 7 miles home. Next day and since I have to dance on the gas and crank it 3 or 4 times to get it started. It runs well after it's warmed up. The mechanic refuses to do anything further with it. Any suggestions re the pu not the mechanic. Thanks!

if it makes a discrete grinding sound when started cold it could be your timing chain..if it does have that grinding or screetching sound its probly. your timing chain and you will have to replace the timing chain, sprockets, chain guides(metal backed and rubber coated), and a chain tensioner and you might just have another 200,000k miles before any other problems. and if you know or think its not your timing chain then make sure you know for sure b/c if the timing chain is chewed up it will cause SERIOUS problems to the engine.

Thanks for your reply. The timing chain was replaced about 30K ago. I think it may be in the carb or choke. I know nothing about either. I spray a carb cleaner and it does better temporarily. Why would it run well when warmed up and not when running cold?

Find a vacuum line diagram and check them all, it takes time but it wont cost anything to check them.
