bad distributer?

so my girlfriend's gs-r dies in traffic today. the engine turns over but doesn't start. i took off the dist. cap and checked the rotor and it spins around. i jammed a screwdriver into one of the plug wires and held it up to a bolt and had her try to start it but there was no spark. so for some reason there is no spark being made. is there some way i can check if its just the rotor or if the distributer is bad? if it is the distributer i suppose any b series one will fit?
