Fast, safe car

Hey everyone,

I've got a buddy in the market for a car. He currently just drives his mom's v6 Trailblazer, and is looking for something fast.

So I'd like to know if you all know of some good, (relatively) fast cars with good crash test ratings. I'd just tell him to get a TransAM (that's what I drive), but he can't get a V8 for insurance reasons. His budget is around $10,000.

Oh yeah, he's really tall (6' 4") so headroom is a bit of an issue.

Thanks in advance!

How about get a V6 Firebird/Camaro and turbocharge or supercharge it? Insurance isn't too bad on the V6.

Pretty much everyone will come back and tell him to buy the car that they drive. You know he can't go wrong with a Honda. A friend of mine is 6' 7" and fits just fine in his Civic.

I'd say an older 2.5RS from subie pretty neat car lil porky and nothing too fast but its a tank in wrecks and has pep easy to tune and AWD most subies have good head room but just check for safety.

wrong, its bad because its a sports car and its RWD. go with something FWD or AWD. what about a used WRX? whats insurance and price like on those.

His dad wont let hime get an F-Body, just because. So that rules out V6 Camaros and Firebirds. And he'd prefer RWD, for handling purposes (he's flexible on that one). Also has an aversion to Hondas, but Acuras are okay.

I'll look into that Subaru.

One of my other friends is selling his 3000GT. How is the mileage and crash tests on those?

Yeah, he knows that Honda and Acura are the same company. He just doesn't like most of the models. And he has to get a car made in the 90's or 00's

Fast + Safe = Often expensive

Fast + Cheap = Not Usually safe

Cheap + Safe = Not Usually fast

I say something like a 2000+ Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

Can't go wrong with a Supercharged 4 door sedan. I like those cars lots, hell look at jeffs_GTP_sleeper, his runs 11's with some sick 60' times...

I say a Honda. Something that has the potential to be fast but requires work to get there. Fast cars often get more respect when you build them IMO. Too many people I see get a fast car right off the bat and don't respect it enough. They either wreck it or get into a lot of trouble with it. Remembering hours under the car making the car what it is tends to be a good reminder to use the higher functions in your brain.

Plus they are supported very strongly in the aftermarket world, get good gas mileage, and are pretty reliable.

True, Honda's are a cheap project to buy into.

And with the right combination of parts and money thrown at them, they do go along pretty good.

And, are cheap on insurance and gas.

Same to be said about early 90s Nissan Sentra SE-Rs. Thems are little badasses. If I can find one for cheap, I might pick one up.

I wouldn't mind a CRX Dx, or a VX... whichever had like 70hp. Maximum efficiency.

Why not consider a 98-99 Audi a4? You could find one under 10k, with decent mileage on it...

EDIT: + the insurance is low... maybe you should look into those

my buddy has a 2001 Volvo C70 coupe, that inline 5 cylinder with turbo is pretty quick.

It's an automatic, but still peppy... and luxuriously appointed.:thumbups:

My best bud from highschool has a Volvo...I wanna say S70 turbo...it was their version of the BMW 3 serries kinda, older and boxy, I thought it was awesome, and it was fast enough to run better than the V6 'stangs and Fbodies, and it was pretty comfy....and its a fucking Volvo, they are like, some of hte safest cars on the road.

Yea, right now I'd say Volvo could be the way to go for him...

Look into the Volvo, and tell us what you, or in this case your friend thinks... Because he's the one looking for a ride not you right?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

im surprised no one has pointed this out, but the TrailBlazer never had a V6.... its an inline 6 ;)

I was looking into 2nd Generation Automatic RX-7's and then doing a manual 13B swap into it....insruance wouldnt be much more than what it is on my truck for me, but i decided agianst it because i really didnt want to take on that much work...
another project i was looking at was an S13 with an SR20DET swap...

oh but uhhh...may i suggest a late 90's lower milage Extended cab S-10 4cyl....they make turbo kits that will run 9psi and make thoes things scoot like you wouldnt beleive... v6 vortec my ass... lower it a tad or mono leaf it, put som anti roll bars on it and they handle quite nice too.

In the mid to late '90's chevy made a Trail Blazer that was pretty much the same as a regular Blazer but had skid plates and a slightly higher stance. They also came with the same vortex 4.3 V-6 that the other blazers had. This was before the ZR-2 package came about. :2cents:

The people on the other side of the block have one of those regular Blazer Trailblazers... always wondered what the story behind that thing was.
