2000 Tiburon Check Engine light on again!!!!

I've owned my Tiburon since 2000. I've had almost no problems with it. About 2 years ago the check engine light came on and then about 1 minute later the engine died in the middle of town. I had to have it towed in. The problem----needed new plugs, wires & the fuel system was cleaned. About 6 months ago the check engine light came on at home so I didn't go anywhere. My husband changed the plugs & wires, it sounded good so I drove it to Hyundai and they said the code was the plugs. They also changed the manifold gasket that was recalled while they had it.

OK, yesterday the check engine light came on while I was driving and again I was stranded in town. It was towed home. My hubby thinks we should try to change the plugs and wires again and get it to the dealer again.

Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?? Why does the car just shut down as soon as the light comes on?

Help me please!

What kind if plugs did you put in it? It most likely won't make a difference, just making sure you didn't put in bosch or some kind if crappy plug. (if you didn't know) Bosch plugs arent recommended for hyundais because they run at a high temp. NGK is the best plugs for them.

thats alota swapping if the plugs and wires... something else must be wrong with the car...
check the:
battery
altenator
oil
etc etc
check the basics

try and bring it to a pep boys or an auto zone, and have the codes read... (what hyundai does) but since this is the 3rd time... something else is up...

My husband changed the plugs & wires last night & the check engine light did go off. He talked to a mechanic that he knows and even showed him the old plugs & wires. The mechanic suggested that we buy a higher quality plug. (he says split fire) We've been getting the ngk that Hyundai recommends. He also suggested taking it to Hyundai and having the catalyitic converter checked out. (i think it's still under warranty)

What do you guys think?

& thanks for the replies so far!

update-----my husband drove it and after about 5 miles it died. We're thinking that it is the converter & it's going to the dealer in the morning.

I'd love to take it to have the codes read, but the nearest auto parts store is about 15 miles & the dealer is 40 miles! I live in the boonies, lol.

Could you give us some more information so we can help? Like if it made any sounds while it died, what does it do when you try to start it? Any info would help. Also did you ever get your ignition coil replaced? I have a 2000 Tiburon and I had to get it replaced. There is a coil pack (also distributorless) in it, I would try to replace that if you didn't already. I don't know for sure, but I don't think a bad cat would make the engine die.

The rpms slow then dies, no noises really. Never had the coil checked. It is being checked out by the dealer today, I'll give you an update when I hear from them.

ALSO--if you let the car cool down for about an hour it will start again.

So when the car dies, try to start it back up. There should be some kind of noise like a clicking (starter) or something. If you try to start it again does it crank or can you just hear the clicking?

The dealer said the code was the crank shaft positioning sensor? Never heard of that one. He said he has changed a lot of them on tibs with as many miles as I've got. (108,000)

It's fixed but we're having the timing belt changed while it's already up there.

You guys ever heard of that code?

i knew it was something else...
bad crank shaft sensor...?
they said the crank shaft itself is fine tho?
and good move on the timing belt...

good luck with the car now

I should have it back tomorrow. They replaced all of my belts while they had it. They said that this sensor was common to go out with the mileage I had. (108,000)
