A/C switches engine off

When I am running the A/C and I want to park---I put it in park, but if i switch the a/c off--it cuts the engine off w/o me having to turn the ignition off~is that normal? It's a 98 cavalier

Also, I have that problem with leaking coolant--will it get worse or is it ok to just refill it periodically?
