I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant ES 4dr love the car just put $1100 for front end work (crash) and a new radiator (split) The only natural problem I have ever had with the car is the past 30k or so when the trans. has started slipping I really don't have the money to get more stuff done to fix this car right now any ideas on fixing this problem? I don't want to replace the trans. and this has not been happening for to long. Help! Help! Help! Besides this problem the trans. runs great. I hear Jiffy lube has some new Trans. cleaning system suppost to clean the whole trans. with new fluid and clean out any debre and burnt flakes, Any ideas?

What is exactly tranny slipping that everyone experiences on Galants?
I have tranny problems but im not sure if its slipping.
When i first start up the engine and try to take off, I get a real slow start. It appears that I'm starting in second. After a moment it feels like hydraulic pressure builds up and and it shifts to 1st. During normal driving the gears shift and stick fine. During high acceleration and shifting the gears manually from 1 to 2 to D the transmission takes a few seconds before it actually starts to change gears. When it does change the next gear sticks real hard, thats why I dont think i have slippage.
The bad part is during de-accleration, the downshift is gears is Friggin rough. Feels like my engine is going to fall out. If i deactivate overdrive the downshifting is smoothed out significantly.

the best way to solve both these problems is to get a proper gearbox (you know the with the wiggly stick and an extra pedal) there so much better and less hastle

My car is an automatic when i press the gasfrom a stopped position it slams into gear and goes,it also slams back when I let off the gas when going a normnal speed. It also runs past redline alot into 6-7k rpm and has problems shifting itsself I have to slightly release the gas and push again to change the gear myself... so its getting to not be so automatic...lol Any ideas for this? I hate cars!

I dont knwo much about trans or galants but my 91 galant is similar to that too. I only have a 1 2 and no 3 or 4 (AUTO). What tranny can be swapped out? What engine on a 91 car be swapped out ?

98 and older galants are plagued with trans-problems. get a quality reman unit or convert to manual(thats what i did)
