AT tranny in bugs .... Any good?

I found a '71 beetle with a stick shift automatic. Thinking about getting it for a commuter but worried about reliability. I didn't even know they came with an AT.

Well I went out and bought the Bug with the Semi automatic tranny. It's a standard tranny so you still shift like a regular Std trans but there is no clutch. Only 2 pedals, the brakes and gas. When shifting, you must push down on the shifter to engage the torque converter. yeah that's right, it has a torque converter instead of a clutch. When checking the fluids, the dipstick is for the torque converter only. you must also check the tranny housing for the Std tranny oil. 2 compartments therefore 2 checks. come on guys you're supposed to be answering my questions ... not me. LOL I'm still looking for info on these trannys.

Tell me whatever you can. Also I'm looking for a wunderbug hood. Any leads. Anyone try making one on their own? Thoughts?

The transmissions provide a lack of performance,they are merely for convenience.They can overheat due to no cooling ability,they engage slowly,adjustment is VERY important,and parts are nearly impossible to get.If restoring it,you might want to keep it as an Auto Stick,but otherwise,a manual conversion may be in order....however,there is no clutch cable tube welded in the tunnel....putting one in could be very tedious.
