what are your opinions on the sts downstream turbo kits? i think that they are a very proficient way to get power without having to do much to the engine and you don't need to go through all that fabricating like you would have to do if you can't find a turbo manifold of the correct intercooler piping, etc.

I know a lot of the domestic guys are running these remote mount turbo systems. I don't see this catching on too well with the import guys, because I don't think the system is very capable of supporting high boost levels. I know I won't be running one of these any time soon, but for a mild daily driver I think it might work well. Just my :2cents:

I don't buy it flat out bluntly put.
I seen it make some ok power but alot of the custom made kits on the cars that also can get STS seen to do better.
I really would like to ride in a car with it and i can't seem to get a good explantion why it doesn't lag *if it really doesn't*

The only explanation I can come up with for the lag issue is the absence of an intercooler. The exhaust gasses are considerably cooler at the tailpipe apposed to the exhaust manifold so there is less of a heat transfer from the turbine to the intake charge, so they can get away with running no intercooler. With no intercooler you make up for the lag created by the extremely long charge pipes. However, because there is no intercooler the system is less efficient making it less possible to run higher boost levels. This is why, in my opinion, these remote mount systems suck. I could be way off here but this is just the way I see it.

I guess but I agree its seems too good to be true. You laid it out better then the site did but then again they are trying to sell somthing.
I peeked over at an LS1 site they have mixed reviews but the realy high powered cars didn't run this setup they had I/Cs and one big single mount right off the motor like most picture a turbo car.

I know that the only way that you could run high boost is to add an intercooler, because the more air you compress the more heat you generate, but if you add an intercooler to this set-up the lag on one of our cars, I would think, would be enormous. I don't think lag is a very big issue with the v-8 guys with all the air their engines are moving, but I really don't see this system doing to well on our little four bangers at high boost levels. I think I will stick to my "normal" turbo set-up.

lag is not created by the amount of piping in the car, its caused by ther fact their isnt enough exhaust gas being pushed through the compressor whell at low idle to turn it fast enough to produce boost. many turbo cars dont have an intercooler, these are used to make the air intake even colder, making it more dense with O2, more O2 means more HP. nothing to do with lag at all.

Your right but your kind of over looking how piping lenght does play in.
get your self a soda pour into a cup now take 2 straws one normal straw and one crazy bendy mile long kids straw.
start drinking a sip from each what gets the soda first? sure they both fill up but the travel lenght adds time to the long piping meaning your compresser has to wait longer to get all the air it needs *and non of us are debating that it gets the air*
Manifold setup is quite important my friend was able to get 700rpm faster boost from a mani change.

I agree that the majority of turbo lag is created by the exhaust pressure, in which case this system has another flaw. However, your thinking on the charge pipes and intercooler having no affect on spool time is incorrect. The volume of the charge pipe and intercooler does play a key role in determining the lag characteristics of a turbo system. Go put 3.5" charge pipes and a 750hp intercooler on a 400whp turbo car and see how much it affects turbo lag. I would be willing to bet my life on the fact that there would be a substantial increase in spool up time. Or add and intercooler to one of these systems and you will get a drop in pressure and increase in lag.
