1997 honda passport
3.2v6

1.at idle the temp needle rises and drops automatically at acceleration
2.changed the thermostat.....still did it
3.changed the fan clutch.....(this is my dad's car so he bought that. Id have saved my money and tried something else.)

I've narrowed it down to water pump......(vehicle does not make excesive noise which I would attribute to a faulty water pump)

ANY INPUT WILL HELP

I'm gonna say this is normal, unless its actually overheating. The temp gauge on my Rodeo is always going up and down in stop and go traffic. You might just be a little low on coolant too.

If you have +150k I would bet you are due for a new Rad.

sorry guys, I should have specified that it goes all the way over. to "H" if you don't take off. i won't let it stay there long becuase im scared to but it doesnt even think about goming off of the h until you take off. but as soon as you move foward it cools off.

That sounds like a bad fan clutch.

Even though you replaced the fan clutch but are you sure the new one you got isn't faulty?

it was brand spankin new. I heard that you can test it out by checking to see if the fan spins freely with the engine off (i shouldbe able to spin it and i'll spin freely.)

BUT i have a 95 rodeo andmydad has a 97 passport (samething) but when his acted up i did that little test onboth vehicles and mine was the same as his and after the replacement it still spun the same. Ithought it was new. It didnt look like it hadbeen installed before. (no oil dirt or scratches.)

If you spin the fan clutch by hand and let go, it should stop almost emmediatly.

Well, mine did that for awhile until I topped off the coolant. I was only low by about a 1/3 of a gallon.
