The horn on my 1994 Protege has gone off a couple times at night unexplainedly. The horn will stop as soon as I go down and hit my horn myself. Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it??

I forgot to mention that I don't have a car alarm either. One time the horn went off in "beeps" and the other time one steady honk. Any help? Thanks and God Bless.

that would be the horn pad in the steering wheel

That is what I was thinking. Would the solution be to add more cushion between the horn and the pad and loosen the screws inside the pad that hold the horn against it? I would guess that as it's cooling at night the metal is expanding or the pad in contracting (or something to that effect) which causes the horn to push up against the pad and go off. As of right now I've just disconnected my horn altogether within the steering wheel.

your local mazda dealer will be able to supply you with a new horn pad. i dont think they are too expensive either. just gotta remove the airbag to
get to it if im not mistaken...

I haven't formally checked up on it but I don't think the 94 protege's have an airbag, mostly due to the fact that i've already dissected the entire pad in unplugging the horn and trying to find the problem... But thanks for the help. God Bless
