Recently noted speedometer needle remains at rest until I have driven 5-10 'minutes first thing in the morning. Cruise control simultaneously non-funtional. Then speedometer needle starts to throb slightly, and soon functions normally as does the cruise control for the rest of the day. After spending the night in our garage, the problem recurs again.
Car has automatic transmision and has performed well for 176,000 miles.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) makes both the speedo/odometer and the cruise control work. The auto trans VSS costs almost $150. Check the electrical connection at the sensor. Remove and test the sensor. It is in the transmission where the passenger side axle goes in.
