Heck I don't know

My friend took out my battery. Upon re-installing it my car, my car computer does not work properly. What do I need to do to re-set it? Thanks

How do you know the computer is not acting properly?
What are the symptoms that caused you to think it is the computer?

When I put the battery back in my car, the car is acting funny. The car dies when I back up, it idles high then low. It dies alot. It just isn't running the same and the only thing done was the battery was taken out and then replaced. A friend of mine told me that the computor needs to reset itself. I had someone else say that there could be a way to restart the computor. SO anyway this is how I know/think it is the computor.

Was anything else worked on while the battery was taken out? Sounds as if something may have been left disconnected. It may take a day or so of driving to get things back to normal at most but you shouldn't have stalling issues.

Not that I am aware of. My friend said he just used my battery to move some cars he had without any batteries.

I looked in the owners manual and there is nothing regarding the battery issue at all. There is not a page that says anything regarding the replacement of a batter or reseting the computor after removing a battery.

Yeah to my knowledge the computer will adjust and set itself after the battery has been disconnected. So you shouldn't have to do anything but drive it for a while. I had stalling issues after changing my plugs out once but after a day it kinda went away on it's own after a couple days of driving. The car would stall as I was coming to a stop and would have to put it in nuetral to keep it running. I had other issues going on at the same time which may have been causing this but it did go away after a day or two of driving.
I'm not an expert so I'll let some of the guys here help you better. I'd just look around under the hood though for any disconnected wiring to be sure.

i think your car needs to learn the idle....coz once you remove the battery, your settings which was already stored in your car computer is gone, now, you have to teach the car to idel properly.
here's what you can do, and i am sure your car will be fine.
first remove the battery again...and leave it disconnected for atleast 20 minutes...
then connect the battery after 20 minutes....
start your car ...and the moment you start your car, move the gear to drive and hold the break....
dont accelerate the car and leave the engine running while you are on drive and hold the break for atleast five minutes. after 5 minutes, switch the car off without taking out of the gear....once its off, you can bring the gear to parking.
then again, repeat the same process above one more time.
and after doing this twice, just start the car like normal and drive.
please post the results so that others who are facing this problem will learn too.
also, do not turn the a/c on while this process...keep the a/c off all the time.
Best Regards

If the Idle re-learn procedure does not work for you, you probably may have a vaccum leak some where.
Reason why you may have a vaccum leak:
The battery is located near a lot of vaccum lines that are very very brittle. If you just bump these lines they will break, causeing some idle issues and cruise control issues and even air conditioning issues.
I suggest disconnecting the negitave side of the battery for a few minutes, and while that's disconnected tap the brake pedal a few times to release any charged voltage in the system. Then recconect the battery and perform the Idle relearn procecure.
Go here for the idle re-learn procedures:

Good Luck,

great info but, the vacuum lines which passes near the battery goes to the vacuum ball which is located under the battery.
even if the line is open and disconnected from the ball, the car wont give that type of problems....it will give problem on higher speed tho causing the a/c blower to shift from front to bottom but, wont cause any serius problems like the one he is facing.
i had my vacuum line disconnected for months from near the battery and it took me a while to fix it...but, even with a brocken vacuum, i was not facing this type of idel issues.

Its just a Reset problem. i had the same one. its nothing else. when the battery is disconnected from the car for a long period of time, this will occur. all you do is the idle relearn procedure and your fine. here is how you do it.
Idle relearn procedure:
On a lot of late 80 to mid 90 GM vehicle you have to relearn the idle if battery is disconnected or ECM replaced. First disconnect the battery for 2 minutes. Then start engine with all accesories turned off, and let idle in drive for 10 minutes (no cheating make sure it is a minimum of 10 minutes). Turn off vehicle for 1 minute. Restart and let idle in Drive for 5 minutes. if the RPM's fluctuate while idling you can slightly increase throttle to compensate but try not to use any throttle input. Hope this helps. we get a lot of this idle surge complaint after the owners changed the battery. It sound stupid but it works.

Thank you all for your input. I am a girl so I don't know much about cars. All I know is that my car was not running properly and it seemed wierd due to the fact that just the batterly was taken out. I drive 50 miles to and from work so my car is my life. my car is running better than it was yesterday and better yesterday than the day before. In this, I believe it could be resetting by itself. If it isn't completly reset by this weekend, I will teach my car to idle by diconnecting of the battery and going through the steps you guys mentioned. Thank you very much and make no mistake you will hear from me again. Thanks Dawn

great....this is another way of re-learn process...
the car computer will learn by the way you drive the car...but, its a slow process which might take upto 2 weeks....
but, if you dont want to take the headach of re-learn then just keep driving, soon your car will stabalize...
Best regards
