Hey all I know that many of you swear by Nelson Tunes. I sent Allen an email asking for info on it and when I got his replay it was less than helpful. I am no mechanic so can somebody please break it down Barny style for me what exactly I'm getting for my $400+

You are getting a new PCM, flashed with one of his custom tunes. He takes factory tunes, and modifies it to get more power, fuel mileage, and driveability from your vehicle. It's definately worth the money. He can do so many things its unreal. The best thing to do is talk to him on the phone, that way you can communicate a bit clearer.

True Barny style. A custom tune is computer programing.
All our trucks run by computer in the truck. This custom tune comes on a computer chip unit that plugs into your truck. Depending on what year truck you have - as many as 400 different things are controlled by the computer - and Nelson can adjust one, some, or many of those controlled activities. What are those activities? You name it - shift speeds and timing of the transmission, heat sensors, oxygen sensors, firing order and timing of spark plug activity, cooling system, fuel mixture settings, on and on and on it goes.

Why is a custom tune (or programming) an improvement over the factory one? Because it is customized for you - your driving style, your interests and desires, your part of the country, your type of fuel used, your driving needs and patterns. Think of it as having a cleaning lady instead of just having a vacuum cleaner. You pay more - you get better use of the hardware.

what has every one gained on gas mpg with a nelson tune. i am thinking of getting it for that. if i gain 2 mpg it would pay for itself in about 10 - 12 months with the regular driving to work and back, not including any trips i go on. and the truck would just be faster and run better and be more fun for me to cruise in.

Saw 2 mpg gain immediately. Went on a 5000 mile trip and my dad got a 3 mpg gain in the mountains. Don't forget that his tune also makes the tranny a more functional/usable item. I say this cause my shifts were beter timed, smoother when wanted and faster/harder when desired(WOT).

Can't wait for my next tune.....

I noticed a small gain with my 93 octane tune and the power gain was great!! Now with my new 87 tune, I dunno what the mileage is, but I can tell its WAY better. I've been 415 miles and have about 1/8 tank left. I ususally get about 360 on a full tank. I'll check it tonight when I fill up and let you know.

I checked yesterday, and I got 19 mpg mixed. Thats up from about 16.5. I'm trying the acetone thing too this time, and now my tune is fully broken in, so we'll really see this next tank.

I drove from Austin and believe you me it was worth it. He can find that fine tune and make sure he gets what you want. Maybe you can find out what color that deck of cards is or if it is that old game of pong he is playing. J/K. It is worth your time to question him and watch the wizard do his magic.

What can it do for my stick shift truck other then the speed limit and maybe set up for electric fans? Anybody know?

Timing curve table, fuel/air ratio at different speeds table, torque management, tire size correction. I can't remeber what the other things were besides the electric fans.
