95 S10 Died While Driving

My S10 4.3 made a popping sound and then died while driving. Now, when I try to start it, it just turns over but doesn't fire. Also had a strange smell while cranking. Not gas, something else. Kinda pungent. It is getting gas though. Not sure about spark. any clues on how to get this thing going again? 195000 miles.
