2001 hyundai elantra po456 code

i have a 2001 elantra and i am getting a po456 code small evap leak what could be the problem i went and took it to the emisson test station it failed because of the code they tested the gas cap it passed the test i dont know where to begin to look for the problem please help

I had the same problem with mine only the code turned up a "Major evac leak". The guy checked out the car, all of the vacuum canisters, etc etc and found nothing. They tested the gas cap, made sure it was on nice and tight and then the check engine light went out. He told me the dealer would have a better computer to check out what the code stood for. Maybe you have to bite the bullet and bring the car in to the ppl that know it inside and out.

Your dealer is going to be the best bet on diagnosing the problem. There are so many different possibilities, that you won't be able to diagnose it without the right tools and equipment. The dealer will hook your car up to an evap tester that blows smoke through the system, and they will look for the leak that way. It could be a canister close valve, fuel vent valve, purge valve, canister, the lines, etc. . . Better to just take it to the dealer.

I would buy an elantra manual from an auto parts store. I forget what my code was, but it was 4-something, and it said that there was an evap canister valve stuck closed. Also, I got a leak code and found out that my gas filler neck had completely rotted off of the filler door/valve. I had all sorts of problems with the car running funny, gas spilling on my rear tire when I filled, etc. .
Try to see if you can find a hole in your gas line somewhere.

my 2001 elantra was having problems also. turned ot to be a intake manifold gasket faliure. caused major vacuum leak. use a vacutek machine to pinpoint the problem. should help.

I have a 2001 elantra GT 125k miles.
error code po456.

I found a corroded tubing above the rear tire on the driver side.
The tubing goes into the filler neck.

I wil post pictures below.

This needed repair makes alot of sense because the rear wheel is constanly throwing sand and water on the hose and tubing.

You will find the tubing corroded and you will have to strip off some of the rubber undercoating to get some tubing exposed that isn't rusted then you will need to install a longer 1/4" neopreen hose.
