oil filter

I have switched to synthetic oil and normally use fram filters. Lately I am hearing bad things about fram. So what filters do you use?

Mobli, Wix, Amsoil. Choose wisely grasshopper, choose wisely. Wix is one of the best.

I recently found a consumer reports article (unfortunatly, I didn't save it) that rated oil filters for function and effeciency. I can't remeber all the ratings but I do know, Fram was among the worse. Those that rated really well were Purolator, AC Delco and K&N (there were some others). Part of the problem is some pressure flow valve or something like that which doesn't work all that well in many of the cheaper filters. I use Purolator Premium Plus with Mobil 1 synthetic oil and change it when my change oil light comes on. It might be a bit of over kill, but keeping my engine running well is worth it. I use both of these on My '02 Superado as well as my '05 Malibu Maxx.

Royal purple suggests changing your filter (you have to add a fresh quart when you do this) every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

Better yet get the Amsoil remote filter set up that has the 10% second filter and then you know the second filter cleans 10% of the oil going through the filter to something like 99.99%. There was a thread with that link a few months ago. Makes changing oil easier and keeps the oil cleaner.

Yeah, but how much does it cost?

I use WIX 51522. That's all I've ever used and all I will ever use.

On my 2004 Silverado - I use Purolator One filters (best) during the April thru September timeframe - and then Purolator Premium Plus filters (not quite the ONE category) for the later Fall/Winter/Early Spring months of October thru March in Wisconsin.

Why do I do this? Because the Puraltor One filters have more filter material than virtually any other filter - which is great during the warm/hot months - but not what I want to use in the cold winter months of Wisconsin where more start up thickening can be an issue. Both Puraltor filters rank well - and don't have the weaknesses that FRAM and its many derivatives have (FRAM makes quite a number of filters under other names).

i wish i would have known this sooner, because i have used fram filters in many of my cars and there is 1 on my truck now, but the oil will be changed soon so it is going and i am gonna get something different.

I think Fram is the most popular filter because it is available everywhere, like WalMart, Meijer, etc. I think I'll try a different filter next time.

Also saw an interesting opinion in there about Slick 50 and other additives that contain Teflon. The crap belongs in your frying pan, not your engine.
