key replacement

I just bought a 2000 Jetta and I only received one key from the dealer. What are my options for getting a new one? I would like to have one with a remote if possible. What are the prices on these? Thanks!

You can buy and program a switchblade remote yourself for the 99-01 Jettas. The KeylessRide website wants $89 for the remote half and $60 for the plastic key half and metal key blank...so $149. once we purchased the key from the link, who would make the copy of the key? Do we need to go to the VW dealer to have this done?

VW wants 169.00 total for bots halfs. Plus you need to get the key programmed at the dealer anyway.

You don't need a dealer to program a 99-01 key, its just a blank piece of metal. You would only need a locksmith or VW dealership to cut a blank for to match your VIN. You can program the remotes easily like this:

Keyless Entry Remote Programing:
* switch ignition to ON
* close all doors and rear hatch / trunk
* Using a second key in driver's door, turn key to UNLOCK position and hold for approximately 10 seconds
* the horn should honk 3 times after that 10 second period, release key but leave in lock cylinder
* Press the UNLOCK / DISARM button on the transmitter; horn should sound to recognize frequency
* Press the UNLOCK / DISARM button on the second transmitter, if applicable
* Again, turn key to in driver's door to UNLOCK position and hold for approximately 10 seconds, horn should sound again
* remove door key, and finally remove ignition keyKeyless Entry should be reprogrammed and full functional.

Thanks a lot....those programming instructions did help.* However,
they didnt work exactly and I had to make some minor changes to get
it to work.** I did as follows:
switched the ignition On* (engine off)
then rolled down the driver windows
left the ignition On and closed the door
Outside the car inserted a second key in the drivers side lock
Turned the key towards on and held it.* At the same time
pressed the unlock button on the new remote for a few seconds.
Let go and pressed it again until I heard the alarm.
That was it...it worked.

99-01 uses immobilizer 2.
01+ uses immobilizer 3.

Both systems require the keys to be programmed to the immobilizer coil on the ingition switch and instrument cluster.

I want to resurrect this thread since I need an extra key for my 99.5 jetta.

There are a number of flip key blanks on ebay for sale. Can I buy one of those and then program it myself following the steps on this thread? Are all 99 jetta keys cut the same w/ just the programming different?

You will need the key to be cut to your VIN. So find your blank switch blade remote for the cheapest on the net, then take to VW dealer and have them cut and VAG.COM program it to your vehicle. About $45 dollars over hear.
