the car in question-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/hells_gullet/camaro1.jpg
I either need to fix up my camaro or sell it.
Heres what I am looking at doing
1. Replacing the engine (same engine just one that isnt blown)
2. Paint
3. Replacing the some of the interior: seats, headliner, and dash should cover it
4. Minor body repair.
I plan on doing all the work myself including the painting. By myself I mean with the help of my "Jack of all trades" Father. I'm very confidiant we won't have a problem with any of the work. We have done all those things before, with the exception of painting. I'm not worried about it though my dad has used a spraygun before and knows the technique.
Here are the questions I have:
From what I have heard automotive paint is expensive. Am I going to be able to get the paint as cheap as I could get the car painted at Maaco?
Should I just sell it?

1. no
2. no
lol but seriously, supplies on my car cost me bout 1000... maaco paint is shit, don't do it, it will ruin your car. supplies are expensive, because red is the most expensive regular color (i mean aside of all the special paints). but don't sell it, if you love your car, don't get rid of it. you will regret it if u do. but if your heart isn't set on making the car what you want, then you are wasting your time. the work that you are talking about will try your patience, and will require alot of blood sweat and tears...

Screw paint. Its all too much work when you prep the car then shoot and color-sand it. Dont do it because you wont get the money you will invest. What I am looking at is a parts car (not even a nice one) I would rather go and find a nice project real cheap. Part her out or save for the future.
The paint is done, so is primer and thres maybe some houshold paint on top of that too.If you wanna do it just strip the paint to the metal and take off some body panels and then have them to spray it in a boot or turn your garage in a spray boot. Color-sand yourself. The engine is easy.

Well it's better than finding ANOTHER project car that you more than likely dont know all of the problems.
I say keep the car and do it yourself.. hell redoing the whole interior isnt that bad, as you can make it way better than before and MANY members in this forum have done it, I know Erik has done and is going to redo interior again, and Dave here has put a new engine in and all.. so I think you'd have all the help or need to know it all here.

Too much money. I paid $700 for a trans am that has new paint on it and its a driver. Believe me there are lots of stupid people that beat the hell out their cars and has no clue how to fix them (it all comes down to houslehold paint and scotch tape). I once bought a car from a pot-head that hit a curb when he was high. So there was no alighment (one wheel was looking the other way) on the car and he drove it like that for 2 weeks untill the fuel pump died (I had to repalce both tires). I got the car for half of its value and put in one tie rod and two tires. I got so much joy when I ripped this son of a bitch off. (I personally hated him at the time)

since when does seats, headliner, and dashpad account for "all the interior"???
IMHO, that car is well worth putting the time and effort into, as for maaco, if you do all the prep and just have them shoot the paint, it'll come out just fine.

well it was ok when i got it, but like i said it wasnt taken care of at all, the side skirt on the drivers side was busted, i had to use fiberglass filler to fix it, the paint sucked ass so it had to be painted, the windows didnt work at all, it needed a new maf sensor, new altornater, new plugs and wires (that were never changed and its a 96), hell to tell the truth before i started moding the damn thing i dumped 2grand in it just so it worked right. hell all the weatherstrippen needs to be replaced, and the headliner needs to be redone as well. dont just give up your car man, when u fix her up im telling u at the end u will be happy. trust me.

You can allways do a primer job for like $20 and leave it. It would look stupid but you can beat the price.

Whats up with the $20 prime job?

I think it was Ridge with the primer paint job. Now you're all gonna see the hill-billy shine through here, but I liked it.
Primer that bitch up, tint the windows, and spend your cash on the motor and interior. People'll want to race cause they think its a dog, and the prick theives, won't know what's really there.

I did a TPI swap and ran into some ridiculous wiring problems, made me want to push the car off a cliff for quite some time. This summer I stripped my car down to metal and painted it - color change. Turned out pretty nice, but it is a TON of work to do it right. It was much more time consumsing and probably more frustrating than the TPI swap.
I would not do it again.
If you are staying with the same color, and if the paint is not peeling or chipping off, meaning you only need to scuff up the old paint and don't need to bring it to bare metal, it would be a lot less work.
Paint isn't cheap either. Different qualities come at varying prices. Most of the time MAACO uses cheap quality paint, and they also don't do a base-coat, clear-coat technique.
I'd save up and get it done right.

Well, primer jobs are cool. If you strip it to the metal and then spray really expensive high quality primer. Also I heard that it doesnt last long (5 years at te most). Still cool because just keep on wet sanding and spraying new primer over again.
I hate all people that prime cars on top of the other 6 different clear, color, and primer jobs.
