528i Wagon rear door

I have a 1999 528i wagon. The battery died on the key for the central locking system. The central locking system does not work and more annoying the rear door is stuck in an "in between" position. It is not fully closed and will not open. When I try to open it manually the rear latch motor engages and dooor goes up and down about 1/2 inch but remains in its current state.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Climb into the back and use the manual emergency release. I believe its eather a glow in the dark triangle or a black rectangular piece about this big /////////////
Pull that out and pull on the cable and the thunk should open.

It doesn't have a trunk. Its a station wagon.

Can you replace the battery for the key?

I don't have personal experience with this proceedure, but someone once wrote: You can remove the license plate light and apply a 12V source (Using flash light batteries in series; i.e., 6V+6V) to power-up the locking system. Then you can open the hood to jump your battery... and check your charging system. (Maybe you left the map lights on.

Also, if you have one of those cigerette lighter cords that can be used as a 12v source from another car.

All BMW's are equiped with an emergency release for the tailgate or trunk, whichever you have. X5 have them, X3's, 540, 745 325 you name it.

And witht he post above you, wouldnt you have to cut the correct wire, and what is there like 8 wires?
