Shot A/C Compressor: 99 Rodeo

I just returned from a mechanic shop, where they told me my compressor is shot and needs replacing. I balked at the $1,850 estimate. Do I look that rich? I don't think so. I really don't even need air conditioning. What are the options? Is there any way to just disable the dead puppy and deal with it next spring? It definitely affects my engine-- it is noisy and creates a burning smell. Alternatively, I see that I can pick up a new compressor for about $550 on the net. How hard is it to swap one out? Thanks!

Does the a/c compressor drive pulley spin freely with the a/c or defrost off? (electromag. clutch disengaged) If so, just unplug the harness to the compressor & drive it as is for now. $1800 is insane for a repair job on your a/c system. It shouldn't be more than $500 max for a compressor (eBay). A new dryer, system purge, recharge, leak check & labor should be maybe $300-500 tops. Unfortunately, major a/c work can easily run $1000 from a shop.
