R32 Vw

Started the R32 a couple hours ago.

I thought it would be cool to add a touch of the "old school" lol...I don't know that they'll let me keep'em on but it's worth a try...right?

http://www.58vw.com/af/r321.jpg

The rims are a set of after market Fuchs. They are replicas of the "earlies" early Porsche style rims us air-cooled VW dudes dig. An original set of Earlies run you about $1300 a pair, so the Fuchs are an affordable option. (sorta)...I don't have plans to run a set on my car as I like the wide white walls with a slight rake....just preference I guess.

I know, I know it's rough, this is just a sketch. I'll transfer the image again and then use some tools like an ellipse set so it's not so nasty. Then scan re-draw in Illustrator, render in Photoshop.

wow! its brilliant. I love the reflections. Did you trace this?

lemorris

I drew it then re-drew it then re-drew it...etc This is the only pencil part of this process. I'm going to print my scan without the wheels and then redraw them on my printed scan then scan it back in as my base so I can redraw it agin in Illustrator.

I used 4 different photos for reference. The reflections come from 2 different shots. I try not to follow the reference too close as I like a more stylized look. You can see how I made up the stuff happening in the lights totally. You can also see how the front end has been at like 5 different heights throughout this transer alone.

It's still really rough..I'll be redoing the wheels with my tools and what not soon. Once I redraw it in the computer I fix a lot there too. Check out my other threads and you'll see what I mean.

Finally got to put some time into it.

This is my drawing on a template layer in Illustrator and then I trace over it. I decided to do the stuff I don't like first this time.

here's the combined line art and highlight stuff in Illy

http://www.58vw.com/af/r323.jpg

I make the lines black and then export to Photoshop for rendering.
Here's the highlights alone. You can see they are unclosed shapes on their own. They intersect with the base lines in Illustrator. Once I export to Photoshop the entire image becomes raster and I can click in the shapes and fill them.

Lemorris, is your illy line work all done in one layer or separate ones for highlights and body lines?
Are they rastered in to PS as separate objects/files before you start the color channel work?

I'm getting confused with this process.

(It's a great design.)

Looks great. Great work.

there are separate layers for highlights and for base lines.

In Illy I do a file--->export

export as a photoshop file WITH layers

make sure antialias is OFF

Then in Photoshop do a

file--->open and open the photoshop file that Illy made for you.

It will open as a layered file.

I then render in channels.

If you want to make selections and color in layers

duplicate your base line layer and your highlight layer in photoshop.

merge your duplicated layers together. Then you can use it to make selections with using the magic wand tool and fill color on new layers.

does that help?

Yes it does help, thanks.
I can see how this is similar to what I do with images in E-3 and Acrylic (which now has the ability to have vector and pixel layers open in the same image file).
Time to make another run thru Jeri's tutorials.

I'm rendering the front wheel and thought I'd show a couple details for you. It's still a work in progress but it's worth a look see...I think...anyway

In the picture below you can see how my highlight channel works. When it's on all the little shapes I drew in Illy are visible in Photoshop. If I want to fill a shape I make sure my highlight channel is selected then click inside the shape with the magic wand tool (or however you want to select) then I click the channel I want to fill on (see how they're separated by color?) then I fill. I can airbrush, gradient, paint bucket, whatever.

Below is the same shot with the highlight channel turned off. When I send this file to the client I'll flatten it to an rgb file and send him the high res image with no extra channels or anything like that.

is the linework done with the pen tool? if it is, i don't understand how. pen wants all paths to be closed. it looks like you're all over the place with whatever tool you use.

lemorris

In Illy the line work is done with the pen tool but I use 2 layers.

The base layer has the countour lines and all the lines that will be black in my final.

The highlight layer is above it and it's where I draw my lines for my highlight shapes.

The highlight shapes end at other lines or shapes so visually it looks like a closed path but in Illustrator I don't fill or render any color.

When I export my Illustrator file as a Photoshop file including layers and antialias off I get the magic.

Open the exported file in Photoshop and it's a layered PSD file.

by duplicating then merging a copy of my base layer and my highlight layer I get a selection layer. I can then use the magic wand and just click inside a shape and fill it with whatever color. Photoshop is raster and sees space between lines as selectable areas.

I'll try to do a mini tute today and post it.

Once you see it, it'll become crystal clear.

lemorris, i sort of understand what you said, but mostly do not. you're a master at it, and i'm in kindergarten. i do know the difference between raster and vector graphics. for years, i avoided using vector-based apps because i hated the way the tools worked. but now i am forcing myself to learn vector.

right now, all i know how to do with the pen tool is create closed paths and use the bezier curve things. i know how to add, delete, and transform points. i can trace a hand-drawn logo. but i create separate paths for each letter, because if you screw up one letter and delete it, and you have all of them on the same path, then all of the letters, good and bad, are deleted.

It's just.... awesome. Like jcsaleen said it looks like photochopped... it all looks so real like a photo, the reflections fit... awesome work lemorris! How much does the VW guy pay for it?
