Transmission Question

On my 86 GT, the transmission is really loose. It wont really stay in gear. If I put it into first, it isn't held in first. I can freely move it around, even in a circle. Should I get it rebuilt, or just replaced? And if I do get it replaced, I'd be worried about getting a good transmission.
I don't want to end up with a transmission like in my Civic (for example, I shift out of third gear about 40 normally), I want something more towords performance. Also, what can I expect to pay in total for either the rebuild or the replaced transmission, both parts cost and labor?

If your 86 has a four speed transmission, many are available. If it has the Getrag 5 speed, very expensive to find one and get it fixed.
If it is just a problem with shift cables the parts for the 5 speed are a couple of hundred bucks.
Check the transmission links on this thread. As to cost, you need to check with transmission rebuilders (Cottman or Aamco), but you are probably looking at $1K. It is a 20 year old car that needs fixing.

Before you junk your trans, check your cables. A common occurance with 'slack' in the shift on fiero trans is the cables wear and loosen over time. These cables can be picked up relatively cheap from autozone / advance and are less labor intensive in replacing rather than the trans.

Ok, thanks guys. When I get some free time, I'm going to have to make some calls.
