4.0 camshaft timing

Im in the middle of my rebuild. The authorized gm manual has conflicting pictures on camshaft timing. One pic shows the cam dowels straight up on one head and possibly straight down on the other. But another pic appears to show all four straight up. The text doesnt help .No guesses please only reply if you know for sure. Thanks.

You should have left it alone you dont rebuild these engines you replace them. The labor and time that it take to change the head gasket on one of these engines it is much cheaper to but a use one and have it put in. Save yourself a headache and get another engine.
but if you reall must rebuild it. just try either timing setting. turn the engine slow with a breaker bar and if non of the pistons hit the valves then the timing is set right. if the piston hits a valve then try the other setting. make sure you got it right before you put everything back together other wise you will be buying a new engine
