Dust Cover

I have a 89 K2500. I installled a fresh 350 a couple of weeks ago. Now the flywheel is hitting the dust cover when I excelerate. What would happen if I leave the dust cover off the truck until I figure out the problem?

I am just a "shade tree" mechanic, but I dont think I would want to leave the dust shield off.

Do you know what is causing the rubbing? Was it a used flywheel? Could it simply be warped or bent?

you mean the metal lower part of the bell housing, right? it is better looking to have it on there, but its not absolutely necessary on a truck that sees street driving only. i would definately use it offroad where stuff could chip your flywheel or you could hit it on a rock and mess it up. my 73 i bought over a year ago and it never had the cover on it and it was fine

It is moving thru the thrust genereated on throttle so you need to adj the clearance in the cover or adj the mounting holes for it to give the proper clearance

Yes, you could leave it off for street driving. It just keeps debris away from your flywheel etc. I had this happen before with a plastic cover. I went from a 305 engine to a 350 truck engine in my car and the 305 cover got a groove worn in it from rubbing on the flywheel.I replaced the cover with one from the 350 engine,no problem. I guess they are different size covers.
