Before you post: If this thread get's argumentative at all I will delete it myself. I have no problems with a good debate but it seemed a little to argumentative the last time around. Fair warning to all.

Have fun

AMS chief editor Bernd Ostmann has been the first mag tester that had the pleasure to ride 400+ in the EB 16.4 Bugatti Veyron at VW test course Ehra-Lessien...

For the metric challenged
402 kph is 249.9 mph
100 kph is 62mph
200 kph is 124mph
25 meters is 82 feet
1950 kg is 4299 lbs!
some impressions what he said about that day...

the track has been kinda damp in the morning, kinda scary at 400km/h, so 111m/sec without crash barries like in Nardo, well not really, rear wing setup to 2° so 40 to 50kg downforce at rear axle engineers promise that thisīll be enough for a smooth ride even on wet pavement...
through the first corner with 220 easily - absolute brutal accelerating up to 300 within seconds a light left hand bend with 380 - looking into the rear mirror - just an enormous spray but just like they told the EB16.4 is a very smooth car to ride even at that speeds...
the sepcial Michelin tires are working just perfect, they were tested up to 500km/h and before a high speed run they require 3bar pressure - this is one of the points the driver has to go through with a check list and a second car key to unlock the high speed mode - here the two front diffusor flaps are closed, the rear wing selects 2° and the body is lowered to 6.5cm front and 7cm rear a sepecial system is monitoring everything and when only one parameter is not ok the car automatically switches to handling-mode...
the first run ended with "only" 380km/h - the car switched to handling because the exhaust temperatures reached critical 970°C - cooling down the car at 220 or 5000rpm in 4th gear...
the weather gets better, itīs much warmer now and engineers force the AMS team to "act" - next run 398km/h - this time itīs the driverīs fault as he has enabled the A/C on the previous cooling lap costing some km/h on that fast run - so again a cooling lap and then full concentration on the last run with nearly 400 the rpm showed 5800 in 7th gear, now it shows 6200rpm at a speed of 402km/h ...

braking is again a new experience 31.4m (!!!) from 100 to 0 with a 1950kg car...

on the other hand acceleration is also outstanding - measured 25m long black rubber from all four wheels after the standard sprint with launch-control - result: 2.5sec to 100 and 7.3 to 200

on a side note - at 400 km/h the EB16.4 needs ONE liter fuel for ONE kilometer so they calculated every 12min a gas station on autobahn when driving 400

With that kind of fuel consumption, gas prices really need to go down!

Whilst I agree with Gordon Murray regaring Top Speed records being a little immature.

At least the Veyron is a full standard production car. And as such qualifies for the record 1000 times more than the 9ff Porsche 911. Which gets around the rules because all German Tuners are classified as manufacturers regardless of the fact its just another modified 911.

The Bugatti has now achieved what it set out to do. I say it should be scrapped now. Its a pointless car.

2 million dollars, 1 Litre = 1 Km at 400kms/h,

i rather buy myself an appachie, better looking, faster, more aggressive (real rockets), better fuel consumption. 2 seater too.

Top speed, top speed, how many Mclaren owner have reached the top speed of the car ?
How many of you have reached the top speed of your own car ?
The top speed in this case is more a marketing idea ... even it is a fact.

I think it's logical that a new car is better that an 10 years old one. But what is better ?

The Mclaren is a good car because it can be driven easily in town and fastely on the Highways.

We will see what the Veyron can do ...

Even if top speed is rarely achieved, the 0-60, 0-100, and 0-150 numbers are all things that just about all owners would use.

It's turbo, it's no McLaren, etc., etc. But it is cool in its own right.

The turbo's I'd own as far as super performance...

I agree. Even though the top speed honors have become a marketing ploy as "jkbon" already said, you still can't deny that building a streetcar to go that fast is an engineering marvel.

Even though the Veyron is over-done, it's still a pretty cool car. My favorite part is the sweet interior. ;)

This car is even faster than the 402 Km/h the ams crew did in ehra !
A few months ago or so there was an official test under FIA regulations which was controled by the TUEV !
The car reached 405 Km/h in one direction and 411 Km/h in the opposite direction - which is an average speed of 408 Km/h !!

Well, all I have to say about this is that it took 10 years for someone to do it. 10 years of technology advancement and they get what .5 mph per year of technology. Happy we aren't letting these guys design planes, otherwise it would still take weeks to fly from LA to NY LOL!

Funny I could just imangine GM..."Umm I think we need a special key and then we make it run one way then another and then we give it the Nike Air Jordan paint job so Pdiddy will buy one. Ok OK where did you guys put the Crystal holder?"

WAHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHA. I wouldn't own that car longer than it would take to sell it if someone gave it to me. Looks like some kind of nightmarish cross between a Hiphop stars "whip" (Ghetto for car don't you know) and something found after a long weekend at a NASCAR track watching turds circle the bowl. Just don't like it no matter how fast it is.

Comparing it to the F1 is like comparing Monet to Sherwin Williams, both are painters but one does houses!
lol!

WG.

BTW isn't this a McLaren site?

Every supercar is interesting. Thats why its a "supercar". But none of these recent "supercars" are better than a Mclaren F1 because, even though they do beat its performance, they are doing it years later and will never be able to compete head to head (meaning if Gordon could build it today...). It is a lot easier to build a supercar with today's technology and more examples to follow/compete against (almost everyone has or is making a supercar these days). Gordon set out to create the best "drivers car" and never intended to set any records, or win Le Mans for that matter. Each of these cars can beat the Mclaren F1 at something but not at everything. For example, Ferrari and Porsche have a rich racing history but build 500 or more of their supercars. Koenigsegg builds a lot less but has no racing history. It should mean something when today's "supercars" are compared to a 10 year old car. The Mclaren F1 has set the standard and whenever the word "supercar" is said, the Mclaren F1 will always be the first to come to mind.

Interesting. At least it can actually sort of live up to its claims. Was looking ugly there for a while. Oh, wait, it's still ugly. Sorry, had to say it :D :P

I'm wondering about all this work to get the car stable at those speeds...kinda weird.

Waiting for the nurburgring run?

Heh heh...this is a scale model (didn't know there was one!) of the one and only road-legal Porsche 917 :sunglasse. And yes LM-spec 917s run very close to 400km/h in the long straight at Le Mans (that was back in 1970 too with worse brakes, tyres and especially downforce ...quite a nightmare...those cars were deadly-unstable at these speeds!). But technically only the racecars were driven at 400km/h....

Actually Dauer claims 404.6km/h... but I searched and still haven't found any independent confirmation of that run...

who cares if the veyron beat the f1 in top speed records. the f1 is still by far the ultimate drivers car, and it only took like 13 years and 400 more hp with the help of four turbos and 4 more cylinders to do it, the mclaren that ran 240.1 was xp5 built in like 1992 or 93 right? and after all these years and that much power and such the veyron only beat the f1 by a mear 9 mph, pathetic i say, shame on thomas bscher for building it, the f1 could go faster if geared properly anyway, just as gordon murray said.
