Chip for 98 GLX

Hello all I have a automatic GLX and its nothing like my 96 Jetta GLX manual. Seems to be a bit laggy in the throttle not the UMPH my 96 had when I slam the gas. Sometimes it even feels a little like theres some kinda speed regulator on the car like those golf carts that slow you down. But the biggest thing is it seems to lack the punch of the manual. Any advice I almost feel like its a GLS or something. I was thinking a chip might help. Both the 96 and the 98 are stock I just cant see how the automatics performance is that much worse than the manual.
