I had a 1997 k-1500 4x4 was cutting out and eventualy died on a bumpy paved road in nowheresville Pennsylvania.
Would just crank and I could smell gas.
My Dad was with me and looked under the hood and noticed a coil wire (I guess) had come lose.
Only way He noticed was He saw it spark as I turned the engine over. No way I would have found it myself on the side of the road.
Anyway, maybe check the wires and see if something is lose from all the bumps?
You may have pulled it lose doing an oil change or checking the Tranny. dip stick.

I had the same problem with my 96 Tahoe with a Vortec 5.7. I had it to several mechanics and was told everything from a timing issue to clogged fuel injectors. Finally when I went to NewYork for a visit home, I went to the local Chevy dealership and it was diagnosed and fixed in 3 hours. The fuel regulator was dumping too much fuel into the right bank of cylinders. It cost me $275.00 and three hours but it was fixed and I even encountered slightly better fuel economy. 2.5mpg. I guess the mechanics in Virginia suck!
